British oil tankers seized by Iran
The Daily Telegraph ^

Posted on 07/19/2019 1:05:57 PM PDT by sinsofsolarempirefan

A British-flagged oil tanker was seized by Iran on Friday night and was heading towards a Revolutionary Guard base, in a major escalation of tensions along one of the world's most vital oil shipping routes.

The Stena Impero had been en route to Saudi Arabia but made an abrupt change of course and began moving towards the Iranian island of Qeshm, according to data relayed by maritime tracking services.

The ship “went dark”, meaning its identification system was turned off, at 16:29 UK time and nothing has been heard from her or her 23 crew since.

Northern Marine, a Clyde-based subsidiary of the ship's Swedish owner Stena AB, confirmed that a “hostile action” had preceded the vessel's change of course on Friday afternoon.

I think it’s ‘technically’ international Waters.
but those countries have ‘national waters’ powers too.

the law of the Sea can get... dubious.

Amen to that. We should have enlisted their help back in 2001 too.

I don’t understand what Iran hopes to gain from this. They have to know they’ll just get their ass kicked?

The Brits and Liberia and UAE need to take care of this NOT America!!!!!!

Sick of us getting involved in crap when it should be the ones being attacked. Let them handle it.

If not for President Trump, just in the short time he's been in office, one of those tankers could have been ours but they're not. Time to let the 'allies' stand for their own countries.

At the minimum, iran expects to drive oil prices up. they desperately need increased price for their oil.

Brits can’t build a full size carrier. Hence STOL/VTOL.

Or we could have obama call them up and tell them to ‘cut it out’ like he did with the Russians.

One thing made the Mid East what it is today.

Jimmah Carter.

And yes, that led to Shia taking over there.

[trump doesn’t want Congress to have the great power over him that a war would give them.]

Praying Mantis lasted all of 1 day, during which half of Iran’s Navy was destroyed or damaged. Congress has no ability to rein Trump in for a strike campaign even lasting 60 days, thanks to the War Powers Act. It gives him an additional 30 days to wind down operations. That’s enough to destroy every piece of military equipment valued at over $1m that’s owned by Iran.

That’s not even counting the authorization for operations in the Middle East provided in the wake of 9/11. The Iranians took the entire US embassy hostage in 1979. That’s a terrorist act, and an act of war. They sponsored the massacre of 200+ Marine peacekeepers, in a terrorist attack, who were in Lebanon as part of a UN resolution, tasked with keep apart Israeli troops and the PLO. We have plenty of reason to bomb the hell out of Iran.

The media keeps posing false choices. We are in the position of a guy with a scoped rifle hundreds of yards away from an attacker armed with a knife. There is no reason to get close to the knife-armed assailant. Blow him away from a distance.

just remember what happened to bush jr.

What if the short-term response is not sufficient?
Trump is sunk is what happens.
China would love to give Iran money to subject Trump to Pelosi’s demands.

Bush invaded. Strike missions and invasions are different things. With strike missions, you break stuff and leave. How much damage the President wants to do is completely up to him. It’s completely arbitrary. Colin Powell came up with a really stupid formulation - you break it, you own it - that’s testament to his stupidity. The entire point of the military is to break things - you break it, they’re f***ed. That’s how countries have traditionally dealt with their enemies.

It worked with Iraq and it’s worked with Libya. Is either country sponsoring terrorists against us or building nukes? If not, mission accomplished. The idea that we’re responsible for building them into Germany or Japan, or we’re the biggest sinners on the planet, is woolly-headed nonsense.

I *so* agree with you. Achieving that against the efforts of
US media (and the DC establishment) is a problem though.

Now it’s a diplomatic problem, but it could become a military problem quickly.

As we've seen in the past decade, promises made, promises obliterated. Why should we just because we've done so since Eisenhower? We should just overlook the way our President has been treated or talked about and just let bygones be bygones? They were a key player in the sewage dossier. The only times they've been worth defending and worth fighting with is when Churchill and Thatcher were PM.

I'm sorry, I don't share your concern where the Brits are concerned. They think so little of their population they have let the savage hordes rampage their way in. I just hope and pray that Brexit truly does happen. Those will be the people/country worth defending. Sick and tired of the world relying on America to fight their battles and I'm sick and tired of us involving ourselves in the middle-freaking east..
