Associated Press On Chappaquiddick: 50 Years Ago Today, Kennedy’s Car Did Something
Hot Air ^ | July 19, 2019 | ED MORRISSEY

AP Images ✔ @AP_Images 50 years ago today, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy left a party on Chappaquiddick Island near Martha's Vineyard with Mary Jo Kopechne, 28; some time later, Kennedy's car went off a bridge into the water. Kennedy was able to escape, but Kopechne drowned.

Let’s start this in reverse, as it’s the best way to put this in perspective. It’s not true that Kopechne “drowned.” The coroner never autopsied the body, itself a curious omission when dealing with an unattended death of a healthy young woman.

Eyewitness testimony by the person who recovered her body at the scene, as well as the position of the body, strongly suggests she suffocated after spending a significant amount of time exhausting the oxygen in the air bubble of the submerged car. Heavy covered this in the release of the film Chappaquiddick last year:

Reporting it as a drowning 50 years later is factually deficient, but that’s the least of the sins of this AP headline. Nowhere in this description is the fact that Kennedy was driving the car, and that he was speeding when he went off the bridge. Instead, the car mysteriously “went off a bridge” by itself, or perhaps with Kopechne at the wheel.

Also missing from this description is the fact that Kennedy took nine hours to report the accident to police. He used that time to concoct a ridiculous series of claims in an attempt to minimize or eliminate his culpability for leaving Kopechne behind. If Kopechne did suffocate, as the evidence strongly suggests, a timely report by Kennedy could have saved her life.

I remember watching a documentary about it on A&E. I can’t recall if it was “Investigative Reports” or some other show like that on that channel back in about 1992 or thereabouts.

I recently read the car belonged to Rose Kennedy, so Rose’s car did something.

Democrats do not have to comply with the law.

I watched the movie “Chappaquiddick” on DVD form Netflix. Worth watching. The Kennedys fought to keep the movie from being released.

“Oh wow. And the news quickly turned to landing on the moon.”

Well, landing on the Moon was nothing to sneeze at, obviously. But thankfully for Kennedy, he picked a great time to off her.

I was told by an insurance exec who said he had handled Mary Jo’s workers comp claim, that her body “was covered with bite marks.” I don’k know if he’s still alive, or if age has claimed him. He would be in his late 80s or 90s.

My thoughts about the Kennedy-MJ happening....

Kennedy was driving the car. MJ was the passenger. What sex act by MJ on K would cause him to “lose control” of the car and drive off the bridge?

Her family refused to have the autopsy performed is what I read a few years ago... source long forgotten. What would the autopsy have revealed that the family did not want revealed? Foreign substance in mouth, throat?

This explanation of what caused the car go off the bridge is why K took hours to report the “accident”. Being a “Kennedy” and a U.S. senator helped him evade the real consequences of this tragic event.

Blaze away...

I saw a documentary on 20 or more years ago about showing that he basically tortured her before her death. Called his lawyers, not 911.

The definitive book on Chappaquiddick has been written. It is “Senatorial Privilege”.

It shows that Ted was a craven coward and worse.

Never heard of that selling point before. I know that a friend of mine drowned in one of them. He somehow ended up upside down in a ditch filled with water and for unknown reasons couldn’t get out. I still visit his grave occasionally. July 30, 1967

jfk was fighting corruption including corruption within his own family when he was killed. the press has been co-opted ever since. no wonder teddy (emk?) got such preferential treatment from the msm. jfk was a rarity, a relatively uncorrupted (though less than perfect) aristocrat. (i suppose rfk was somewhere in between.)

I have been hopeful of Hillary for Prison, and now Omar, but am now reminded through this thread there is no consequence for the Democrats when they do bad things. 50 years and nothing happened except death for Ted.

You say that he “handled the claim”, but did he authorize the payment of the claim? If paid, how in the world did the work comp insurance company stretch the WC law to make her death claim a payable claim?

Would appreciate someone on Fr reading this comment, with knowledge of the applicable state WC law covering her death share his knowledge and opinion on how this “accident” would be a “payable claim” under the applicable state WC law?
