(CNN) - The National Rifle Association was already reeling from leadership shakeups and allegations of financial mismanagement when it dropped another bombshell.
The NRA accused Chris Cox -- the man who had controlled the organization's lobbying and political activities for more than 15 years -- of trying to overthrow Chief Executive Wayne LaPierre, according to a lawsuit filed last month.
Cox denied the charge to The New York Times, but quickly resigned. His unceremonious sacking stunned NRA board members, who saw Cox as a potential successor to LaPierre, and infuriated political staffers. Some started packing up their desks, unsure of whether they would be ousted too, multiple NRA sources said.
That's when the Washington power brokers really started to worry. Cox's departure, after months of turmoil at the NRA, only amplified the sense that the gun-rights group might not be the political powerhouse in 2020 that it has been for decades, including notably in 2016.
When President Donald Trump convened a meeting with bipartisan lawmakers and signaled and openness to some gun control measures in the wake of a shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 dead, it was Cox who showed up at the White House the following evening.
Afterward, Cox tweeted that Trump didn't want gun control. For his part, Trump tweeted: "Good (Great) meeting in the Oval Office tonight with the NRA!"

Dream on CNN. The NRA may well end up being more powerful than ever.
No kidding, CNN is the one “floundering”.
If the NRA doesn't replace Wayne, their support will continue to erode.
Many big names have already withdrawn their support, along with thousands of individuals.
Not that the NRA doesn’t have its problems right now but the media is attempting to create a narrative here.
In the midst of an orchestrated and well-funded attack on our 2nd Amendment rights, the last thing America needs is this circus in the NRA. If these guys can’t get their collective act together, is there a reputable and committed organization dedicated to the preservation of 2nd Amendment rights in the US?
[[[If the NRA doesn’t replace Wayne]]]
LaPierre has been in far too long. These organizations need to shake up leadership on a regular basis before corruption sets in and people get too comfortable. Too much money flying around. Evidently, Wayne has bought a lot of allies inside the organization. They had better get a handle on this quickly.
This reminds me of the Cincinnati Revolt when Neal Knox raised hell and shook up the organization.
“Floundering.” By the home of the flounders. The capital of Flounderdom. The nest where floundering roosts. CNN.
Yeah... As we speak there are underlings plotting to take over CNN at the first opportunity... And I wouldn't think the NRA would be much different then any other large corporation... Most folks just want to get ahead.. I think Bill Clinton may have misunderstood the concept... :)
Skin that puppy and fry'em up.
Who needs them ?
Own guns. Learn to shoot. Learn safety
Theres 1000 organizations and gun clubs that do just that
The NRA needs to focus on the root of all gun control. The NFA and the GCA is a lie and it must be repealed in it's entirety. All gun control stems from the acceptance of the NFA as legitimate constitutional law. It's all a lie and the people must know the truth. Ask yourself, why do the police need full auto military weapons? Why do non military federal agents and state and local police have thousands of MILITARY weapons yet those same weapons are banned from the citizens? Does anyone think this is what the framers had in mind when the added they wrote the 2nd amendment?
This mess needs to be resolved before active campaigning begins for 2020 election! Last thing we need now is for the NRA to be eating its own...
CNN is foundering. (The correct term.)
They can’t compete with Fox so the Comedy Channel must be their new opponent of choice. Based on the hearty laughter recent CNN articles are causing the latter may have a real fight on their hands.
I agree.
The NRA’s leadership problems, especially the President of it who gave lots of money to a publicity firm that is essentially a Democrat org, hurts the organization.
The GOA, Second Amendment Foundation and others are gaining members.
I hope that the NRA cleans house and regains clout, after they get back on track.
NRA is swirling the drain and they brought it on themselves. Support GOA, SAF, and your state level org. VCDL could use some help too.
