Hillary Clinton won the national “popular vote” by 2,868,686.

She won California by 4,269,978. If Trump had narrowed that margin by (off the top of my head) 60%, that would have been enough to tip the national popular vote to him.

Take California votes out of the picture altogether and we have:

Trump 58501018, and an EC win as well
Clinton 57099756

Clinton way overperformed in California to get what she got in the way of electoral votes. But that’s not my problem. No offense to (all) Californians, but do we want the popular vote in California to call the shots in who gets elected president? I don’t. If that’s the way it’s going to be, then why not just let California vote and the rest of us can stay home? That’s pretty much what eliminating the EC does.

In any case, Hillary Clinton didn’t win a majority of the national popular vote, anyway — only 48.2%. More people voted against her than for her. The same thing happened to her husband — twice. But his EC majority (as is provided for in that often-forgotten document called the Constitution) provided legitimacy for his presidencies. I haven’t heard the anti-EC crowd say what they would do when the national popular vote winner doesn’t win over 50%. A runoff? The election cycle is too long anyway, and it seems to me that that would just add chaos.

I am tired of people saying: Trump lost the popular vote

He won. He won the popular vote in 30 states, while Clinton won the popular vote in 20. So Trump won the popular vote.

In our Union there is nothing stopping California or New York stating that illegals can vote. If it wasnt for the electoral college what would you do then? Allow a couple of cheating rogue states to steal the election?

By making such a statement, he confirms that he no longer represents the state of Vermont....... No true representative of the state of Vermont would advocate for the elimination of the electoral college.

".... Then we can become the Ununited States, eh Bernie?...."

That's exactly what he's pitching. He's a commie through and through.

Hey, Bernie. This is NOT a democracy where the oft repeated democRAT line is "every vote counts".

The US is a constitutional representative republic. The Founders created the national vote that way to prevent the larger states from stampeding over the smaller states.

But, hey, you're welcome to pursue eliminating the Electoral College.

However, the electoral college is ensconced in our Constitution, which means getting rid of it requires a constitutional amendment. That's a two-thirds vote in both the House and the Senate and the ratification of three-fourths (38) of the 50 states.

If it is even possible, given the sharp partisan divide in the country, it could take a decade or more to get rid of it.

What we really need to do is to stop the losers from dictating the terms of winning the elections. Losers like Bernie and Hillary need to follow the law and get the votes, instead of whining because they didn't get the job done.

It’s funny, leftists act as though capitalism marginalizes the less successful, but they want a capitalist model as a voting construct, whereby the most “successful” states (NY, CA) are the only voices heard.

[[How many times have Chicago, NYC, and LA had their states go to the Dem, when the rest of the state is red?]]

This is the perfect argument for keeping the EC.

IIRC, Hillary only won about 16% of the counties in the country

That's what I mean. Whoever wins the majority of counties (or Parishes if we're talking about Louisiana) in a particular state, should win that state. There's no need for Cook County to muscle over the other counties in IL.

Maybe that would be an alternative to the electoral college. Counties won = state win.

Yes, by the requirements of the Constitution, he won. If the shoe were on the other foot, I would say the same. What the Constitution requires is good enough for me. The EC protects the Union against rogue states, and protects the it from being hopelessly dominated by the big states. It works the way it is supposed to.

OK, Senator Sanders. Introduce a Constitutional Amendment to change how we elect the President. It will have to pass by 2/3 majority in the Senate and 2/3 majority in the House. It will then have to be ratified by 38 state legislatures. Easy Peasy. Of course that means only 13 states can stop this. Hardly seems fair.

Now, there is no Constitutional requirement that the Electoral College vote is “winner take all”. Forty-eight state legislatures have chosen to do it that way. If the EC needs to be tweaked, perhaps Sen. Sanders can urge states to distribute their EC votes as Maine and Nebraska do—i.e. the winner in each Congressional District gets one EC vote and the overall winner of the state, gets 2 EC votes. This would put states like California, New York, Illinois in play as well as states like MO, AL, TX.

Ah, but do you think that California’s legislature about to deprive a Democrat of 55 sure electoral votes? Of course not. None of this nonsense is about ‘fairness’ it is about making sure democrats can never lose.

They can always try and leave the Union. Then the rest of the States can decide if they have the desire to stop them.

That is the day CWII will be initiated. I will move my loved ones out of our nation with our family assets.

I will stay and finish the fight or die trying..

We are not a democracy because our forefathers were smart enough to hate inequality and intolerance of mob rule.

There are always questions.

I’m willing to fight and die for my country and constitution to remain as it is now.

Are you willing to die trying to impose a strict democracy onto this nation? If we enter a conflict I will be willing to take your life to prevent your goals from becoming reality.

Strict democracy will never happen by the vote of the people so your only choice will be to accomplish your goal via armed conflict.

You folks maybe need to think about what you are trying to initiate.

Thank you for referencing that article CptnObvious. Please note that the following critique is directed at the article and not at you.

Patriots are reminded that the main reason that misguided, post-17th Amendment ratification Sen. Sanders wants to abolish the Electoral College is the following imo.

Liberals, Democrats, RINOs and Socialists want to permanently control state powers and state revenues that the unconstitutionally big federal government has stolen, and continues to steal from the states, state revenues stolen by means of unconstitutional federal taxes, taxes that corrupt Congress cannot justify under its constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers.

The remedy for unconstitutionally big federal government…

Patriots need to finish the job that they started in the 2016 elections when they elected PDJT.

More specifically, patriots need to elect a new patriot Congress in the 2020 elections that will not only promise to support PDJT's vision for MAGA, now KAG, but will also promise to surrender state powers that the corrupt feds have been stealing from the states back to the states.

And to make such changes permanent, patriots also need to support PDJT in leading the states to repeal the 16th and ill-conceived 17th amendments.

Remember in November 2020!

MAGA! Now KAG! (Keep America Great!)

I have already told my wife that when it starts, I was sending her home to Northern Ireland, and then (Lord willing), bring her back if I’m still around. I will NOT let them get away with it, and will stand by fellow Patriots sides to put an end to this absolute madness!

California, New York and Illinois will elect the President when the Electoral College is gone. The rest of the country will not have a vote. Doing away with the Electoral College will take away our votes.

The rest of the country will not have a vote.

Exactly. And further, why would any politician, even our own representatives, bother to vote for small states' interests at all? California needs electricity and water, OK, take it from neighboring states and let them experience the rolling blackouts. That's democracy, isn't it? Well, yes it is. Whoever called democracy two wolves and a lamb deciding on who's for dinner knew what he was talking about.
