Mayor Bill de Blasio is finally bringing cyclists and drivers together against him.
Following the deaths of 17 Big Apple cyclists this year, Hizzoner announced Thursday a $58.4 million bike-safety plan that will expand bike lanes, redesign perilous intersections and sic cops on dangerous drivers enraging motorists over the loss of thousands of parking spaces and sending cycling advocates in a tizzy that the plan isnt going far enough.
It cannot go on like this, de Blasio said of the 17 cyclists killed this year during an announcement at PS 170 in Bay Ridge.
Under the initiative, the city is promising to add 80 more miles of protected bike lanes, with priority going to high-crash neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens such as Jackson Heights, Corona, Maspeth, Ridgewood, and East New York.
The city also plans to re-configure 100 dangerous intersections with an eye to cyclist safety, expand bike parking through public-private partnerships, and strengthen traffic enforcement against trucks, which were behind more than half of this years cyclist deaths.

It would be interesting to examine those 17 accidents and determine just who was at fault. How many oblivious motorists vs. how many oblivious bike riders? My guess is the money might be better spent on bicycle safety education. Or just realize that riding a bicycle in heavy congested urban traffic might just be risky behavior. I wouldnt ride my Harley in that traffic. What makes a bicycle rider think he is entitled to a safe ride?
worst mayor in the country. And yet won by a freaking landslide. You deserve this NYers
Soon as the cops get dried off.
Spandex.
Maybe they should start handing out tickets to cyclists who ignore the same traffic laws that drivers are expected to obey.
Stuck on stupid, The cyclists pay nothing, NOTHING! The motorists pay insurance, registration, licensing fees that increase at nausium. One road I traveled to visit a friend in queens. The street was barely able to accommodate a car, those parked could not open their doors while another car was oncoming, yet there was a designated bike lane on this street! This hell bent accommodation of cyclist like we are in China is absolutely a spit in the face and a kick in the a## for those who pay these high fees that increase yearly and the cyclist get a free ride. These lunatics running the show have been given the power to do just this. Shame on you new Yorkers for allowing this
Same here. Riding a bicycle in N.Y. City seems kind of stupid to me. I ride but I’m a country girl and ride country roads or off-road trails. I don’t ride in traffic.
Rats! I was going to say in before the bicycle haters but too late!
All money-laundering for his buddies and him in the corrupt NYC and NYS Unions. The plan will not be $56 million, it will be more like $456 Million.
I mount a Go-Pro on the bike and took this selfie. :-) I like to video and document my rides. I also mount my .38 Special on the handlebars. For me this is the only safe way to ride.
I have a road bike but it only goes to greenways and country roads.
In a city of 8 million people 17 bike deaths is statistical noise. Around here with a population of about 20,000 in the COUNTY there are 1 or 2 a year. This is a case of as Rahm said, “not letting a crisis go to waste”. Impose communism by restricting free movement. The commies in NYC have been looking for ways to eliminate private vehicles, this is another step in that direction.
....38 Special on the handlebars.... A woman after my own heart! Your husband is a VERY lucky man.
IMHO the smoldering dumpster fires that are our urban death zones is actually our hope for the future. As they collapse our prospects are enhanced. That being the case they cant collapse fast enough to suit me.
LOL, the last thing he asks when I go out the door to the truck to go ride is “do you have your gun”? Since I ride such remote places it’s a good idea. I feel safer riding alone back in the woods than I do on the road but still...there is nobody to help if I run up on something bigger than me back in the woods.
Just be careful, especially at our advanced years. An EMT who worked for me once started walking for his health. He started on a 6 mile trail through the woods (20 years ago before everyone took a cell phone everywhere). Halfway in he started having chest pain. He had to walk three miles to his vehicle to drive himself to the ER for treatment for his heart attack.
The theory you are promoting is called “acceleration”. I’ve been promoting that for years. It goes with the whole “boiling frog” thing. Trump has made it go mainstream.
I will. I’m in pretty good shape for 64 but I have a physical every 6-months. I was really out of shape when I retired and my doctor wanted to check me often so we just kept doing it. I went from 162 pounds to what you see in the picture, about 125 or less, in 10 months. My cell phone is also mounted to the handlebars. LOL I pack a lot of weight on the bike when I ride solo. A person should always keep their condition in mind when they start a rigorous exercise program. Before my doctor gave me the OK to start riding six years ago she sent me to the hospital outpatient center for an echo cardiogram and ultrasounds on my heart and arteries.
There is not much that is healthier for the muscles, heart, and lungs that riding a mountain bike. Riding off-road is an especially good workout. It’s also low impact for older joints. You still need to walk for bone density but the bike takes care of the rest.
Car, truck, motorcycle, or bicycle, it doesn’t matter. I don’t discriminate.
I hate any idiot who runs a red light and tries to kill me, injure me, or damage/destroy my vehicle.
e scooters are running rampant in Hoboken. The riders do follow traffic laws. And what adults without a bicycle have a helmet which is required. They just unlock with the app and ride off. Doubt many tickets are issued.
