‘I Have a Moral Responsibility to Come Forward’: Colonel Accuses Top Military Nominee of Assault

Trigger Warning: This article contains information and details about sexual assault and/or violence, which may be upsetting to survivors.

WASHINGTON — Col. Kathryn A. Spletstoser of the Army says she had returned to her hotel room and was putting on face cream on the night of Dec. 2, 2017, after a full day at the annual Reagan National Defense Forum in California, when her boss, Air Force Gen. John E. Hyten, the commander of United States Strategic Command, knocked on her door and said he wanted to talk to her.

The military’s itinerary of General Hyten’s movements that day in Simi Valley, which was viewed by The New York Times, said he was having “executive time.” Colonel Spletstoser said in an interview this week that her boss “sat on the bed in front of the TV and asked me to sit down next to him.”

According to her account, General Hyten reached for her hand. She became alarmed, and stood back up. He stood up too, she said, and pulled her to him and kissed her on the lips while pressing himself against her, then ejaculated, getting semen on his sweatpants and on her yoga pants.

In April, President Trump nominated General Hyten to be the next vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. If confirmed, he would become the country’s No. 2 military officer, helping to oversee the 1.2 million active-duty American troops at home and deployed around the world.

"then ejaculated, getting semen on his sweatpants and on her yoga pants"

BS. The General would have been 50+ at this time, he is not a 16 year old loaded gun waiting to pop.

Furthermore: "The official said it would be difficult, though not impossible, for the general to have entered Colonel Spletstoser’s room without his security guards noticing. None of the guards, the official said, reported anything amiss."

The penalty for conducting a rape hoax should be death.

It’s gotten out of control and will completely destroy civil society if not put down with extreme prejudice.

Kathryn A. Spletstoser ...now there’s a name that would make many men horny just to mention it.

She should have reported it at the time. So I say it didn’t happen. I am a female who was in the JAG Corps for 3 years active and 8 reserve. Never had a problem. However I will say this—every time a female reported a rape (which was not frequent) the MPs thought either she was gay (ridiculous, right) or lying. This COL would have known she needed to report it if it happened. And it sounds like she had the spine to absolutely do so. She didn’t, so it didn’t happen.

“Col. Kathryn A. Spletstoser of the Army says she had returned to her hotel room and was putting on face cream...”

This is not quite the image I would like to have about a Colonel in the US Army. This just shows how far down our Army has fallen. Unless she was putting on camouflage face paint, like Colonel Kurtz...

I call BS on it too since the press already attempted to decapitate the guy with a deliberate lie designed to roil Trump’s supporters against him. If the guy was a real douchebag the press would not have to misquote him to expose him.

I wonder if he gave her a poor performance review. I’ve met Gen Hyten; I’m no expert on him based on his introducing a talk I gave with my co-author at AFSCHQ. But I doubt this story is true.

Well. That’s it then. Case is over. The colonel no doubt kept the DNA evidence and all that’s left is for the matching test to come back from the lab.

Since she had this moral obligation so late in the game...I don’t believe her. People with moral obligations have them 24 7 365.

I can’t blame her for not blowing the whistle on the general. But she should’ve at least saved the yoga pants.

(The fact she didn’t doesn’t mean she’s a liar, but it does mean she has no evidence.)

Exactly.

An old man is not on a hair trigger. Maybe this is something she “remembers” from interaction with a 16 yr old in her youth. If she had any experience with old men she would know impossible.....

Exactly, produce the ‘blue dress’ yoga pants and then hang the pervert.

No yoga pants, you are too stupid to be a colonel and needs to be charged with false accusation.

I am a male and I have discussed these types of incidents in the news with my wife of 45 years. We met and married as officers in the Air Force together.

We agree that if the woman didn't concurrently report the alleged assault at the time it happen, she gives up the right to report it years later just to disrupt someone's life or to get back at her alleged groper/assaulter.

Something may have happened but by not reporting it, she's giving her tacit approval that it wasn't that big a deal. Or as you say, it didn't happen.

My wife also says that this kind on encounter between men and women is what men and women do in life. Men are attracted to women and vice versa. It's the normal sexual interaction between the genders.

It's how far this biological, sexual "dance" goes that determines whether it is a problem or not. She had to slap an acquaintance onetime during some innocent banter who advanced too far sexually for her comfort zone. That stopped them in their tracks, she said. And that person never bothered her again.

But we both agree, if the incident was not important enough at the time it happen to report it then, it's not important enough to do so years later. Because other "agendas" are in play now.
