Harris, Ocasio-Cortez unveil first step of Green New Deal
The Hill ^ | 07/29/19 | Rebecca Beitsch

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Monday unveiled legislation that would be the first step in implementing the Green New Deal, outlining plans for addressing how environmental plans affect low-income communities.

The draft bill is designed to address what the lawmakers describe as the third pillar of the Green New Deal — ensuring that no community gets left behind.

Dubbed the Climate Equity Act, the legislation lays out steps for Congress and the White House to “guarantee that the policies comprising a future Green New Deal protect the health and economic wellbeing of all Americans for generations to come.”

“Climate change is an existential threat — it’s critical we act now to achieve a cleaner, safer, and healthier future. But it is not enough to simply cut emissions and end our reliance on fossil fuels. We must ensure that communities already contending with unsafe drinking water, toxic air, and lack of economic opportunity are not left behind,” Harris said in a statement.

The Green New Deal, championed by Ocasio-Cortez, would push for a massive shift in the economy away from fossil fuels and toward more environmentally friendly sources of energy, something she said will spur economic development along the way.

The legislation would require the Congressional Budget Office to evaluate how new environmental legislation would impact low-income communities. Projects pushed by the executive branch would face a similar review.

The legislation could help make Harris, a 2020 presidential candidate, more competitive in a Democratic primary full of candidates eagerly sharing their plans for tackling climate change.

“Climate change is an existential threat
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No, it is a fact of life to which we must adapt, same as our ancestors who survived the last Ice Age.
The invasion over our southern border IS an existential threat to the Republic.
Democrats AND Bush League Republicans want that to continue without a thought about the environmental consequences.
Kamala, tell us, what is the track record of you and your fellow Democrats, in dealing with such issues?
Saikat Chakrabarti gave it away a few weeks back.
This isn’t about the environment, it’s about transforming the economy (into Socialism).
Hey commie beyotches. Go to places like China and India where you can’t breathe the air. We scrub all our fossil fuel exhausts. They don’t nor do they seem to care. Ply your leftist trade there.
It's a talking point for the two.
It may not get any real life traction but that's not the point.
The point is their audience will hear they're getting another program 'to help minority communities' who will then mindlessly vote for these two.
Pick up trash, plant some shade trees. You don’t need any legislation to do that, and you can do it today. Low income urban areas are disproportionately areas that need less trash and more shade trees. Does wonders for the rat populations too.
“the legislation lays out steps for Congress and the White House to “guarantee that the policies comprising a future Green New Deal protect the health and economic wellbeing of all Americans for generations to come.”
Since when did any government run program result in protecting the wealth of all Americans?
what’s so funny is that a mere 30+ years ago, the British Left absolutely insisted that UK coal mines MUST stay open, to employ workers and keep even unnecessary production operating. Margaret Thatcher was a devil for attempting to shut down coal mines.
How quickly the Left pivoted on that.
“Climate change is an existential threat”
Do they even KNOW what the word existential means?
They sound like the undergraduate who just read Nietzsche and thinks they have it all figured out.
Just what the residents of low-income communities like inner-city Baltimore need — environmental impact statements relating to climate change.
Will such statements kill a single rat to help solve rodent-infestation problems? Clean up a single garbage-infested lot?
Or even help Kamala Harris pick up a single percentage of support for his presidential quest?
If this isn’t the greatest insult to the intelligence and dignity of poor Americans with serious needs like food and housing, what could possibly be?
Airhead Of Color, and her narcissistic do anything for fame and power compatriot Harris, have probably the collective knowledge and understanding of climate science as does a bag of Cheetos. Nonetheless, they want to define how all of the rest of us live, and alter the economic system of the US in accordance with their ideals. Arrogant doesn’t even begin to describe them.
Hilarious
A woman from India and a woman from Latin America lecturing us about Environmentalism
Their homelands are the poster children for Overpopulation and environmental degradation
Both of them advocate MASSIVE immigration into the United States of uneducated, uncaring people who will consume and pollute at insane levels
Only the Dimbulb Republicant Party would let them get away with such BS
