Ben Carson defends Trump's assessment of Baltimore

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson on Monday night defended President Trump's scathing comments about Baltimore, where Carson worked for years as a neurosurgeon.

Carson, the only black member of Trump's Cabinet, told Fox News host Tucker Carlson that while at Johns Hopkins Hospital he would sometimes find ways to keep young patients for an extra day or two to keep them from returning to squalid conditions.

"As a pediatric neurosurgeon, I spent many hours, sometimes operating all night long, trying to give children of Baltimore and other places around the world a second chance at life. And usually we were successful,” Carson said.

“But a few days later, I was in a horrible dilemma, because some of those kids had to go back into homes in East Baltimore that were infested with rats and roaches and ticks and mold and lead and violence,” he added.

Trump spent much of the last few days degrading Baltimore and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), who represents parts of the city. Over the weekend, he described Baltimore as a "very dangerous & filthy place" where "no human being would want to live."

One thing I haven’t seen or heard mentioned in all this Baltimore/Rats/Cummings dustup is the bed bugs. I do believe Baltimore is near or at the top for the infestation of these critters as well.

Why haven’t they demolished some of those old row houses and replaced them with decent low income housing?

Clearing out those festering rat breeding grounds couldn’t cost that much, the city could donate the land and people could either rent or buy

Trump spent much of the last few days degrading Baltimore...

Incorrect word usage. Baltimore is already degraded. Trump merely called attention to how far it has fallen.

It’s nice having a President unafraid to point out the obvious, even in the face of venomous defenders of delusion.

Whoever mentions race first is a racist.

As has been said elsewhere, this Baltimore/Elijah Cummins Twitter war is part of a strategy to attack the Dems 2020 campaign.

Ben Carson has certainly been giving his input given his extensive experience in Baltimore. In fact, Baltimore might have even been his idea from the get-go.

"Clearing out those festering rat breeding grounds couldn’t cost that much,"

Cost? The cost isn't the problem. Nobody is willing to pick up a freakin' shovel or broom. Nobody...

Pelosi et al can prove POTUS wrong by moving into East Baltimore with zero security detail for a week. I’ll wait.

I think it would take exterminators, followed by Dozers, wrecking balls and lots of giant rock trucks to haul off everything. Build decent housing on the lots, you could even do the row house format.

"Why haven’t they demolished some of those old row houses and replaced them with decent low income housing?"

Actually, the row house structures are awesome. A lot of quality, character and charm under all that crap. New "decent low income housing" would cost much more and the quality much worse than renovating the existing structures.

But again, it requires actual work and not just throwing money at it hoping something happens. Get Habitat for Humanity and a few other non-profit groups together and start sweeping and cleaning out, replacing roofs, rotting wood and mechanicals as needed. Knock out a block every 4 to 6 months. Then the only problem would be training the IPs on how to use trash cans, brooms and kitchen & bathroom cleaner. Oh yeah, and teach them how not to do drugs and kill each other too.

The drug gangs need those old houses to store bodies — just look for fresh, shiny nail heads holding the plywood to the openings. (Fans of “The Wire” will get this reference.)

If the foundations are good and walls are sound then run an apprenticeship program using locals. That way they can learn a trade and buy one of the houses. Electrical, plumbing, drywall, carpentry. Good jobs and good prospects for a decent life.
