As I recall, these are not new. I’m pretty sure such tethered baloons were used in Texas years ago. I seem to recall seing them from a very long ways away and they grew larger and larger as you approached.

The government was testing two tethered balloons loaded with some sort of missile warning technology in Maryland.
One day, our power spiked as one of the balloons got loose and dragged a mile of cable behind it. It made it all the way to Pennsylvania, causing lots of damage along the way.
A friend knew the cops who shot it down.
Why aren’t these balloons guarding the border instead?
Instead everyone needs to go out and moon them when the thing is overhead

Yes not new. One was shot down over Baltimore a while back after it got loose.
