New Zealand's Prime Minister has proposed extreme new controls on gun ownership for the country. They are explicitly designed to move gun ownership in New Zealand from a right to a privilege. The Prime Minister is attempting to follow the Australian playbook on imposing extreme restrictions on gun ownership. From stuff.co.nz:
Firearm owners will have to register their guns amid the largest changes to gun laws in decades.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced details of the firearm law overhaul on Monday, saying it would come with a message ingrained in law: firearm ownership is a privilege and not a right.
Ardern said New Zealand had reached a new normal around firearms after the March 15 terror attack.
The Government is seeking cross-party support the latest reform effort, but already resistance to the a firearm register a contentious measure linking gun serial numbers to licence holders is fomenting.
In a statement that strains credulity, the P.M. claimed the piecemeal implementation of the extreme measures was a deliberate strategy, rather than a lame attempt to add restrictions as the unworkabiliy of the ban became obvious.

Step 2. Say we must Register guns to know who has them.
Step 3. Claim the government planned it that way.
Seig Heil, Bitch!
Okay, who is complying (from what I’ve heard not many so far)? And what do front line police officers think of bringing back the registry? This because the original one for sporting rifles and shotguns created in about 1920 was abolished at their request in 1983 since it costed too many man hours to correct what was there already, not to mention the backlog of inventory that still had to be entered.
No legislation has been put forward yet.
This is what happens when a country lacks a formal, written constitution that protects the citizenry from its government.
Yes.
Both the Australians and the New Zealanders may be thinking the writers of their Constitutions should have included a Bill of Rights.
The Australian Constitution is a very good one... except it lacks a Bill of Rights.
It’s the s**ts when politicians that YOU ELECTED tell you if you can have a “privilege” or not. Suckers!
Say hello to fascist NZ.
IIRC, NZ does not have a formal, written constitution.
From recent decades' experience, that seems to be the problem right there.
” firearm ownership is a privilege and not a right.”
Actually it’s your ability to govern that is the privilege.
Just checked. Per the NZ’s government website: NZ does not have a formal constitution “contained in one document”.
Note to KIWIs: You need one. STAT. Feel free to crib ours, especially the Bill of Rights.
“This is what happens when a country lacks a formal, written constitution that protects the citizenry from its government.”
That bears repeating.
Some commentary by locals there point to the election in November of 2020 in New Zealand, and suggesting that the PM is gone at that point. The pro-gun thing might get votes in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington....but beyond those three cities...it’s weak. But if you counted up the population of Auckland alone, that’s 35-percent of the country.
My prayers are with you New Zealand. May God bless you with the strength to resist this oppression.
I’ve heard it in speech, but that’s the first time that I’ve seen “ costed” in print.
Prepping for my lib congresscritter to retire there, no doubt.
“Actually its your ability to govern that is the privilege.”
BINGO!
Beat me to it.
Theoretically......
Unfortunately it hasnt stopped our government from stripping our rights.
As with New Zealend, we have allowed it to happen.
