NEW YORK (Reuters) - They’re members of a prestigious academic panel with top-secret clearances who’ve advised the Pentagon on some of America’s most vexing national security issues since the Cold War. Over 60 years, they’ve won 11 Nobel prizes and conducted hundreds of government studies.

The advisory group, known as Jason, is a team of some 60 of America’s top physicists and scientists who spend each summer in La Jolla, California, conducting studies commissioned by the Pentagon and other U.S. government agencies.

On March 28, Trump appointee Michael Griffin – the Pentagon’s chief technology officer – unexpectedly moved to terminate the group.

Lisa Gordon-Hagerty, the head of the National Nuclear Security Administration, objected, telling Griffin’s office the scientists were crucial for keeping America’s nuclear stockpile secure, according to an NNSA official and others affiliated with the Jason program. Gordon-Hagerty’s agency offered to take responsibility for the program. She only needed Griffin’s signature to make it happen.

Griffin refused.

Von Braun was 32, and one of the youngest (1912-1977) to come thru that program w/ CIC & JOIA, and he’d be well over 100 if he was still alive.

Odds are 100% that all are dead, and these could be proteges or progeny, but none of the originals survive today.

I’d bet their organizations are rife with spies.

Get them up every morning before daybreak and drive to Fort Irwin. Then let them go out into “the box” to see the environment where a lot of those bells and whistles are supposed to work.

Statistically there must be a few still alive. There are still Holocaust survivors alive, and they had a much harder time of it.

Sounds like some elitist summer camp. No doubt they bring along family/mistresses, etc. to their hard working La Jolla stay.

Gone are the days when we just accepted some association, think tank, gov’t entity or foundation as “a great thing” without actually LOOKING INTO IT, because someone told us it was smart/good/necessary...

They have lied to us for too long and the gig is up now that the research tools are (more) available to us..

If Michael Griffin terminated them, there must be a excellent reason. The man is pure gold.

“The experts get paid about $1,200.00 per day plus expenses.”

It works out to a little under $135,000 each for a summer break in La Jolla.

Put them up in a dorm at a cheap college. If they don’t want to work under those conditions, then it will be obvious what their scam is - easy cash vs patriotism.

No doubt these are the “geniuses” that say climate change is the greatest military threat facing the world.

Sounds like a taxpayer funded boondoggle.

Possibly; most likely they were the varied-age children, but their parents, aunts, uncles etc are long dead or dying.

Yeah, they were a true resource back during the Cold War when academia was an integral part art of our defense technology but that gradually changed when the Cold War ended.

The old line good guys dropped out and Jason became exactly what you described - a resume enhancer for the self described smart guy wanna be elite. And not necessarily the best of the best because the real best were not wasting their summer breaks on a lucrative, all expense paid station in La Jolla, they were directing their research teams back home.

At that point, the program was not really useful but it it least had some reason to exist

When Obama was elected, he stocked the team with ideological allies dedicated to providing politicized technical or scientific evaluations and studies furthering the Obama military agenda

At that time they became a negative asset that needed to be disbanded

The fact that the Dems want to keep the program tells you all you need to know. I doubt it is as important as they think they are and the hypenated name that wanted to keep it is also an indicator of them not being worth the money.

One of the most ridiculous and inaccurate terms currently used is “thought leaders”.
