Trump Eyes a New Real-Estate Purchase: Greenland
WSJ ^ | Aug. 15, 2019 | Vivian Salama, Rebecca Ballhaus and Andrew Restuccia

WASHINGTON—President Trump made his name on the world’s most famous island. Now he wants to buy the world’s biggest.

The idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland has captured the former real-estate developer’s imagination, according to people familiar with the deliberations, who said Mr. Trump has, with varying degrees of seriousness, repeatedly expressed interest in buying the ice-covered autonomous Danish territory between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans.

In meetings, at dinners and in passing conversations, Mr. Trump has asked advisers whether the U.S. can acquire Greenland, listened with interest when they discuss its abundant resources and geopolitical importance, and, according to two of the people, has asked his White House counsel to look into the idea.

Some of his advisers have supported the concept, saying it was a good economic play, two of the people said, while others dismissed it as a fleeting fascination that will never come to fruition. It is also unclear how the U.S. would go about acquiring Greenland even if the effort were serious.

With a population of about 56,000, Greenland is a self-ruling part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and while its government decides on most domestic matters, foreign and security policy is handled by Copenhagen. Mr. Trump is scheduled to make his first visit to Denmark early next month, although the visit is unrelated, these people said.

I wonder if he’s considered purchasing Canada as well.

We almost nabbed it once along with Newfoundland in the 40s.

If we can put it to work, then why not.

It is a brilliant idea.

As far as I know, the last purchase was of the Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917.

There are vast resources off the coast of Denmark, which we could access.

Here’s what the Dubliners have to say about this:

Oh Greenland is a dreadful place
A land that’s never green
Where there’s ice and snow, and the whalefishes blow
And the daylight’s seldom seen brave boys
Daylight’s seldom seen.

Actually we got the Virgin Islands from the Danes as well... so there is plenty of precedence between us for a purchase like this.

After China, Greenland Mining (HQ: Australia) is the largest cache of Rare Earth Elements in the world. (symbol: GDLNF)

Here is a report. Note, the Company helped subsidize the cost of the research, which is common in Australia for penny stocks.

Wow’s business model was to give people flying transatlantic a breather - legs can get cramped! While it strikes me that Iceland is more interesting than Greenland (and Wow failed), maybe the model could work there.

The Arctic Ocean oil would be in play, and you could really keep a bead on Russia’s Northern fleet from there.

We could tunnel under ground, like a Moon or Mars colony.

And the whale blubber! Its the best up there - just like Mom used to make.

...noting that since Mr. Trump hadn’t floated the idea at a campaign rally yet, he probably isn’t seriously considering it.

Hard to argue with that. Once he starts talking about it at rallies then you know he's serious.

Oh, man, think of the possibilities - you could put this enormous gold T on the ground that would be visible from the moon with the naked eye right in the middle. A giant enclosed nature park where you could play polar bears vs. liberals. What’s not to like?

I think it’s a great idea as well. In fact, I’m kind of bummed we never absorbed Canada when we had the chance. Imagine the U.S. basically being all of North America.
