Trump wants Greenland because adding its expanse to the territory of the US will enable us to recalculate the average temperature in the US to a lower absolute level.

“They are valuable for their rare earth minerals, a key component to manufacturing energy dense capacitors and batteries.

They’re also important because they are literally one of the only developed sources of rare earth minerals outside of China and not held by a Chinese corporation.”

This is exact reason Trump may be interested in Greenland. Greenland is a hedge against China’s monopoly on the rare earth market. Without those critical materials many of our advanced technologies would not work. In late 2010 China tightened the supply of dysprosium and the price skyrocketed. Dysprosium is critical in the manufacturing of high temperature permanent magnets. They go in everything. Several pounds worth in every car, tons in larger generators.

In the current trade war with China, one of their big weapons is the control of the rare earth market.

I’m looking at the replies on this thread and wonder how many people have looked at Greenland on a globe? It’s strategically located in the North Atlantic, is near very vital sea lanes to the Arctic and both China and Russia want to develop the Arctic area. I know men from World War II who were stationed there. I agree that Greenland is living off Denmark (this was a subplot on the series Borgen with Sidse Babette Knudsen), but it is a serious offer as they have no defense.

Yeah if Denmark tells them that they're on their own, the 56K Eskimos or whatever they are will need a navy, army and Air Force.

Iceland doesn't have any of that. Neither does Luxembourg.

Could be a negotiating strategy.

You need someone to negotiate with, don't you? Neither Denmark or Greenland are interested in the idea.

Since Greenland is not available then maybe it is worth looking at buying Canada?

So they say. But dangle $25 billion in front of them , enough to pay every Greenlander $500,000, then they might be.

My dad, when he was in the AF, had a TDY at Thule AFB.

And, to add to your point, Greenland makes Denmark an Arctic Ocean nation along with US [by reason of Alaska], Canada, Norway and Russia). If these five countries were to agree, we could divide up the economic rights of that ocean. (There would still be freedom of the seas for navigation.)

I can tell you the citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador would leap at the chance to leave Canada and become our 51st state.

” No Mr. President! You cannot buy our rock infested shithole!” That is why we are called Greenland....because there’s nothing green...wait a second. We just woke up and came to our senses. We are Danish and this makes no sense. Our brains are frozen. Please send more global warming!”
