Lawyer: Iranian supertanker captain no longer wants the job

The captain of an Iranian supertanker at the center of a diplomatic standoff no longer wants to keep command of the ship, which is in need of repairs that could impede its immediate departure from Gibraltar, the sailor’s lawyer said Friday.

The tanker — and its 2.1 million tons of Iranian light crude oil — seemed to perform mild maneuvers on Friday but largely remained still, shrouded in heavy fog in waters off the British overseas territory a day after authorities ended its detention for allegedly breaching European Union sanctions on Syria.

The release Thursday, as the United States reportedly maneuvered to re-seize the tanker, came as the head of the Gibraltar government said that Iran had promised him not to deliver the fuel to a sanctioned refinery in Syrian territory, although an Iranian official later disputed that those assurances had been delivered.

Any delay of the vessel’s departure could provide a window of opportunity for the U.S. to mount further legal action and try to again stop the tanker amid growing confrontation with Tehran.

This is helpful information for the USA, but why is the Captains lawyer speaking to the international press? I find that surprising. Maybe he wants better pay or work conditions, and there is no other way to get the government’s attention, no Labor Unions in Iran.

So what's to stop Iran from agreeing to anything the guy wants.......until he gets back into Iran, at which point, he disappears?

Maybe he is concerned about Iran, and perhaps might want to morph into the background. Doesn’t want to be Epsteined for losing at least the oil, if not the ship as well.

I wouldn’t pilot it either knowing it’s going to get torpedoed just outside of the Syrian port.

Ruh-Roh!

“I was dreadfully misquoted by either the Americans or Israel.
That was not me who made those horrible statements against Iran. Surely no one believes I would make such vile remarks!”

Haha

Will your documentary also be 50% phishing, 50% intra-family drama/squabbling?

I don’t think I would invite my Son to be on an oil tanker with me.

He’s always threatening to make me live in a refrigerator box when I’m older.

As for my wife, well, no way.

“Pull over. I have to go to the bathroom.”

“There’s a bathroom on the next deck.”

“That tiny thing? With all those men using it? I don’t think most of them could hit the sea if they had to pee.”

More likely the tanker’s captain has been informed that there is an American destroyer (or more) waiting for the ship just outside of British territorial waters. Probably not in any hurry to depart only to be boarded again.
