Well, yes. But secularism is at the root of the problem. Consumerism is a symptom of the disease.
Rather than worshiping God the people are worshiping things. Materialism. Consumerism is the worship of things they wish to possess, even if it is only for a season and then the thing is discarded.
The people buy things today that will be trash tomorrow.
The introspection of a prayerful life is gone nearly completely from our society. The mainline churches allow it to happen. I cant remember the last time I heard about sin in a sermon.
As a practical minimalist I absolutely agree.
