BACK TO SCHOOL

By Naval Support Activity Chapel Staff

A child came home from his first day of school. His mother asked, “What did you learn today?” He said, “Not enough. I have to go back tomorrow”.

Going back to school is always difficult for both teachers and students. It also means more traffic with school buses back on the road; probably the only ones delighted about schools reopening are the parents.

Going back to school can be a milestone. Kindergarten, sixth grade, high school and college are all significant marks of progress and change (especially when the kid finally gets a job!). For parents, these can be good times to reflect -- and perhaps to set new goals.

It is good to reflect on memories of your kids growing up, and how proud you are of who they are becoming. It is also important to understand what they will need next as they grow and develop.

An important goal is not only to ensure that they learn reading, writing and arithmetic, but also that they learn about God as well. The Bible tells us to train and teach our children in the ways of God (Proverbs 22:6 and Ephesians 6:4). One great way to do this is to take them to church.

Spiritually Exhausted?

Bible in a Year : Psalms 100–102; 1 Corinthians 1

An angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 1 Kings 19:5 “Emotionally, we’ve sometimes worked a full day in one hour,” Zack Eswine writes in his book The Imperfect Pastor. Although he was referring specifically to the burdens pastors frequently carry, this is true for any of us. Weighty emotions and responsibilities can leave us physically, mentally, and spiritually exhausted. And all we want to do is sleep.

In 1 Kings 19, the prophet Elijah found himself in a situation where he was depleted in every way. We read that Queen Jezebel threatened to put him to death (vv. 1–2) after she discovered he had the prophets of Baal killed (see 18:16–40). Elijah was so afraid he ran away and prayed he would die (19:3–4).

In his distress, he lay down. An angel touched him twice and told him to “get up and eat” (vv. 5, 7). After the second time, Elijah was strengthened by the food God provided, and he “traveled forty days and forty nights” until he came to a cave (vv. 8–9). There, the Lord appeared to him and recommissioned him (vv. 9–18)—and he was refreshed and able to continue the work God had for him to do.

Sometimes we too need to be encouraged in the Lord. This may come in the form of a talk with another believer, a worship song, or time in prayer and God’s Word.

Feeling exhausted? Give your burdens to God today and be refreshed! He will carry your load.

Reflect & Pray

What area in your life is calling out for encouragement? What form may this come in and how can you seek it out?

Loving God, help me to turn to You when I am worn out. Thank You that in You I find rest.

I am glad that I am out of that school thing and can look up things I want to know now.

Howdy, Kathy.

Bummer the winds are wreaking so much havoc up there.
We had no TV or internet all day yesterday .... Comcast had major outage problems across the country. They’re apparently still going on in some areas but all’s well here ..... for now.

Thank you Kathy!
It was warm and storms on and off for a couple days.
I loathe the end of summer cause I dread the cold Buffalo winter

Early one morning a mother went to her sleeping son and woke him up.

“Wake up, son. It’s time to go to school.”
“But why, Mama? I don’t want to go to school.”

“Give me two reasons why you don’t want to go to school.”
“One, all the children hate me. Two, all the teachers hate me, ...”

“Oh! that’s no reason. Come on, you have to go to school!”
“Give me two good reasons WHY I should go to school?”

“One, you are FIFTY-TWO years old. Two, you are the PRINCIPAL of the school.”

Howdy, LUV.

Hope the day’s been a good one. I imagine it’s still too hot to get out to do anything, even sit with the kitties at meal times.

Hi, there, radu!

Yes, it’s unbearable and will be even worse tomorrow. Then hopefully will “cool” down into the 90s next week. The kitties don’t stick around for long. The only thing cool out there is their water. I check it with my finger, and it always feels nice and refreshing.

Has it cooled off there any? Did the museum stay really busy today?

UGH! Doesn’t sound good.
We have two days ahead that will be a little hotter and muggier than today, then will “cool” off to low 90s for the rest of the week. So nope, it hasn’t cooled off here. It’s August. LOL

It was pretty busy at the museum today but not overwhelming since we had 6 people working. Just steady. It felt good to get home and finally get to sit down for a while.

Pads are poured for the new AC/heat units and I hope they get those in SOON. It was might warm there today.

Hope they get that unit up and running soon. I’m sure the AC part will be needed well into September....sort of like here.

Glad it was busy, but being shorthanded really can make a lot of work for the few that showed up.

I’m going to take a melatonin soon. I didn’t go to sleep til 5am last night and it wasn’t Peaches’ fault. I just simply could not shut the ol’ brain off. If I do that tonight, the pew won’t be safe from my head, LOL!

Yes, A/C will be needed for a while yet and it sure would be nice to have it in the tank room at the museum. The large room has A/C but the unit is old and a new one will be nice.

We weren’t short-handed today at all. There are normally three of us working, sometimes four, but today there were six.

I hope you get more sleep tonight! You do NOT need to nod off in church in the morning. LOL
