Given the demographics and the Dem inherent advantage in the Electoral College, the Dems will be competitive regardless of the nominee. The Dems have won the popular vote in 6 out of the last 7 Presidential elections. They start out with a lock on the higher number of electoral votes. The 2020 race will be close.

Closer than 2016? Why would you think that when Trump was elected based on his promises, most all of which have been kept?

In ‘16 he had nothing to run on except his vision but this time he has his record and a very,very good one it is.

And then there is the competition. Ever heard the phrase, “You can’t beat somebody with nobody”?

I think overall the numbers will be close but take out ny and calif. which we won’t win anyway and I wonder just how close the rest are.
