The dolphins were filmed gently playing with the puffer, passing it between each other for 20 to 30 minutes at a time, unlike the fish they had caught as prey which were swiftly torn apart. Zoologist and series producer Rob Pilley said that it was the first time dolphins had been filmed behaving this way.
At one point the dolphins are seen floating just underneath the water's surface, apparently mesmerised by their own reflections.
Re
I had to spend the night in town because the mechanic said I had blown a seal.
“Or theyre too stupid to know puffer fish are toxic?”
Well one could ask are humans too stupid to know meth is toxic?
We can tell who’s had a few tokes over the years ;-)
I hope you brushed your teeth...
70,000+ overdoses
88,000+ alcohol related deaths
47,000+ suicides
Ah, the old liberal trick of changing the topic ...
Don't change the subject. Answer my question as to why, if dolphins are so smart, they don't get out of the way of passing tuna boats?
Did you read the article?
Well since you called me a liberal, Ill get right on your request.
Don’t Bogart that pufferfish!
Just a music fan, honest! :o)
These dolphins had to be hanging around some environmentalist kooks to learn that behavior. LOL I was a one time member of the Sierra Club, and a lot of the people I knew in our chapter were heavy pot smokers. Being one with nature I guess!
I wish I could remember the name of that recording. It was pretty funny.
LOL Maybe thats why Greenpeace and other environmental groups that emphasize the oceans are always hitting their members up for money. Buying dope for dolphins gets expensive!
Clearly the US needs to launch a war on puffer fish
Knock knock
Who is it?
Trick or trout
Its the Williams kid again. Give him a fish
That’s pretty cool.
I’ll be jealous the whole day.
I’m petty :)
If I could go back I would change a lot of those casino trips to something like your adventure.
Been 3 years since i’ve been to a casino. Just woke up one day and said “this makes no sense” :)
It did all those other years and gave me a rush.
I’ll bet swimming with dolphins gives a better and healthier rush.
Thats a good point. I remember some time ago the major canned tuna brands like Starkist and Chicken of the Sea emphasized on their labels that their product was dolphin free. This was around the time a bunch of highly publicized science reports noted how intelligent dolphins were and that they were even more intelligent than human beings!
“Now, dolphins may join that list. Footage from a new BBC documentary series, “Spy in the Pod,” reveals what appears to be dolphins getting high off of pufferfish. Pufferfish produce a potent defensive chemical, which they eject when threatened. In small enough doses, however, the toxin seems to induce “a trance-like state” in dolphins that come into contact with it.”
Did they test the dolphins to see if they were getting high?
They just “assume” they are trying to get high, rather than being too stupid to avoid the toxic puffer fish.
It seemed surreal. You could hear them coming by the “squeaks” getting louder. There must have been around 50 of them. From adults to babies. After that we snorkeled for around an hour or two close to rocks and waves. Fighting the tide pushing you towards the rocks and holding your breath a couple hundred times gets you quite tired. Slept like a child that night.
