Trump tweet: "...lower the average price of a car to consumers by more than $3000"
twitter.com/realdonaldtrump ^ | 08/21/2019 | President Donald J. Trump

My proposal to the politically correct Automobile Companies would lower the average price of a car to consumers by more than $3000, while at the same time making the cars substantially safer. Engines would run smoother. Very little impact on the environment! Foolish executives!

Does anyone know the details? Most obvious would be a relaxing of CAFE standards so that everything isn't running on a four-cylinder turbo.

Yeah it seems like it’s part of another tweet that he never sent. It’s out of place with others he sent this morning . It would be great if the government didn’t mandate so many environmental codes into our autos!

Relaxing or eliminating CAFE would be a huge win. Automakers are squeezing every ounce of weight possible out of cars. Ford made the rear refrigerant lines in my Expedition out of ALUMINUM! They just corroded and failed at five years and had to be replaced at a cost of $1,330. This is happening to many (most?) Ford Expeditions.

It’s ok to sock the consumer with many thousands of dollars of CAFE-caused failures if it saves just one gallon of gasoline.

I remember the days when you opened the hood and could actually see the oil filter.

I am gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that this was Ford’s fault. Gas mileage is always a concern to motorists because it’s a daily expense. You don’t see Toyota chintzing out on A/C components.

“...lower the average price of a car to consumers by more than $3000”

I remember when you could buy a WHOLE NEW for under 10K!
The price of a car now is more than a house was in the 60s!!!

.."so that everything isn't running on a four-cylinder turbo. "

probably in reference to the ability to build sturdier (heavier) frames which would not pass CAFE standards. Not sure how heavier, safer equates to $3k cheaper.

If you extend that to my '66 Dodge Dart, that includes water pump (30 min.), fuel pump (10 min.). Honestly though, I do not miss points or carburetors.

Trump is proposing rolling back Obama’s increased emission standards, but California is saying they will keep their stricter standards, and auto manufacturers are engineering their new models to comply with California

Get rid of the new refrigerant used in AC and that could drop the price by more than a thousand...
