Is It True That 'Getting Killed by Police Is a Leading Cause of Death for Young Black Men,' as the LA Times Claims?
I refer you to the August 16 story that ran under the headline Getting killed by police is a leading cause of death for young black men in America. As is the intent, the headline is an attention-grabber. My goodness, the reader is expected to say, those young black men must be getting a pretty raw deal from the police these days. Most readers of course will not delve beyond the headline, but even those who do will not encounter anything resembling journalism as it was once practiced. Rather, theyll find more than 1,400 words devoted to the racial-grievance agenda that drives so much of what appears in the Los Angeles Times.

Black males are roughly 7% of the population, yet make up nearly half of all murder victims, most often at the hands of other black males. This isn’t a trigger-happy police problem any more than it being a gun problem. Its a cultural problem.
” Most young black men leading a life of crime.
With all due respect, that is also nonsense.
Let me tell you my experience at the annual School Safety Patrol Awards for the Oakland (California) public school safety patrols (kids who help direct traffic before and after school). The Safety Patrol system is under the auspices of the Oakland police department, and there are periodic, though brief, interactions between the kids and the cops during the year.
It’s held at the Mormon temple’s auditorium. There are LOTS of black kids who are members of the safety patrols, and their families come out to watch in substantial numbers. The ceremony commenced and ends with a non-denominational prayer by a Christian minister from a local black Christian church. The main program is run by a police officer who is a suprisingly good master of ceremonies, and the Mayor, Chief of Police and other city officials are in attendance. I went to two of these when my kids were in elementary school.
No one is making the black kids join the safety patrols and no one is making the black families come to the award ceremonies to cheer for their kids at a police-sponsored function. All are proud to be there. I’m not saying this is the whole picture of black culture in Oakland, but it is a real picture, and it is buried way below the sensational stories of rampant crime, on the one hand, and rampant police abuse, on the other.
This is the day-to-day reality of a lot of working class and middle class black people. Respectable, Christian, law abiding, and not automatically the adversaries of law enforcement. You can draw what conclusions you will, but I was there, and that’s what I saw, two different years.
Murder by other Negros is, I believe, now leading cause of death among young Negro men.
When you n***** going unite and kill the police motherfukers
I work on a government comittee that is made up of mostly black people. One black lady whose son was murdered shut down the black racist talk with this comment .....it wasnt white people who murdered my son. It was black men who killed him.
I’ve also been one to point out that given the apparent legal difficulty of empaneling a jury to stand in judgment over a black defendant that includes no black jurors when combined with the conviction rates should be seen as your average black person is ultimately sick of other people’s criminal shit ... especially if they’re black too.
Bronx jurors constantly acquit guilty fellas...
... watch Chris Rock’s “Obey the Law” video. It’s been pirated / uploaded so many times that the quality is poor but it is most humorous.
Total lie. The leading cause of death among young black men is homicide by other young black men. And then probably drug use or car accidents.
When considering the ratios of black men and crime in general the stats show that they’re disproportionately LESS LIKELY to be killed by a cop.
Plenty of white people are killed by cops but commit fewer crimes per-capita.
I don’t have the numbers handy but this was my understanding.
Good Lord, where do these people get their “facts?” (CNN?)
Fair enough.
Fixed
Cause or effect. Aren’t these related to criminal actions. Related to not result of. Maybe a closer look needs to be taken. Is it a black cultural bias causing this or are all police acting paranoid? Unfortunately liberal media continues their half a$$ reporting.
Good article.
Shows that blacks killed by police (most completely justified) are about 4% of the blacks murdered by other blacks.
So, who is killing black people? Mostly, it is other black people.

Good site with stat breakdown for Chicago.
For young black men between the ages of 15 and 34, the number one cause of death in 2016 was homicide.
A further breakdown of deaths by age group among young black men due to homicide:
Ages 15-19, homicide accounted for 50.8% of total deaths
Ages 20-24, 49.6% of total deaths
Ages 25-34, 34.1% of total deaths
Compared to the statics of all males in the U.S. in these same age categories, homicide was the third leading cause of death with drastically different percentages of total death attributable to homicide:
Ages 15-19, homicide accounted for 20% of total deaths
Ages 20-24, 18% of total deaths
Ages 25-34, 11.3% of total deaths
IOW - Cops don’t even come close to killing the numbers that they manage among themselves...and very few cop-assisted deaths equate to ‘homicide” the way the Black on Black killings do.
