Buying Greenland: Trump haters mock the idea, but China is paying attention
Washington Times ^ | 08/21/2019 | Tammy Bruce

The moment The Wall Street Journal article appeared revealing President Trump was mulling over the idea of the United States buying Greenland, the autonomous Danish territory in the Atlantic, ankle-biters began to mock the idea.

But this usual panic from the jealous chattering class once again reveals the Democrats and envious Trump haters’ biggest unforced error — constantly underestimating Donald Trump. This requires deliberately maintaining a remarkable ignorance about the economic and national security issues we face as a nation.

One of those issues is the vital importance of Greenland, its horrible mismanagement as the Danish elite virtue signal about their environmentalism, condemning its 55,000 residents to poverty-stricken lives, and the national security risks economic dereliction invite. The incompetence ruining Greenland, in fact, compelled Greenlandic officials to reach out to China as they searched for a Sugar Daddy to fund infrastructure projects.

A thread in The Journal report presents a story that implies the president isn’t serious about Greenland.

The newspaper reported it was at a “dinner with associates last spring” when Mr. Trump brought up the idea and asked people at the table what they thought.

“The person described the question less as a serious inquiry than as a joke meant to indicate ‘I’m so powerful I could buy a country,’ noting that since Mr. Trump hadn’t floated the idea at a campaign rally yet, he probably wasn’t seriously considering it,” The Journal reported, quoting someone who obviously has contempt for the president.

It does more than anger the ankle-biters on the left. It gets US talking about it so the media can’t bury it. I still think his motive is to STEER the subject towards independence for Quebec and have western Canada fall into our hands. Conquering territory without war. Brilliant.

Trump is the greatest strategic genius the world has known in 2 millennia.

LOL. And who would be his equal in the ancient world, Washington Fire? Sun Tzu? Caesar?

Then-Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis was not happy and convinced Danish officials to fund the infrastructure, sidelining China.

In 1895, Japan attempted to build a naval base in Mexico on the Baja Peninsula. Admiral Mahan convinced President Cleveland that this was a bad idea, and he pushed Mexico to scotch the deal.

“This deal needed to get done under the table with Denmark.
Now, if it sells at all, there will inevitably be a price war over it with China.

I take the view that the whole thing is strategy.

You should see all the Chinese grocery stores and restaurants in Costa Rica since they began infrastructure projects (Ruta 34 etc).
Costa Rica jumped at the chance to endorse the Belt and Road Initiative BNI.....that sucking sound will be all the agricultural products funneled thru the Moin Port headed to China.. Yes they have no bananas

“Trump is the greatest strategic genius the world has known in 2 millennia”

Oh, PULEEEZE! He’s a very smart guy in both business and politics, no doubt, and I’m thrilled that he’s our President. But let’s not get lost in hyperbole like the Dems (Hillary is the smartest woman in the world, or Obama is the smartest guy in the world, etc.).

Oh, and let’s buy Greenland - GREAT idea.

You mock, please provide alternative suggestions.

And I’d consider Pericles and Alexander the Great the men on Trump’s level.

He’s not just a “smart guy” he has mastered the areas of politics, business and media. To conquer one in a lifetime is incredible, all three is unparalleled in history

He won an election that was rigged against him purely down to the sheer strategic genius he possesses.

Trump is the Phenomenon of The Republic.

The media jumped on Trump because their Chinese paymasters ordered them to

Well let’s see now, liberals are expecting massive global warming which would make Greenland nice and temperate in the near future. I wonder if I could get a federal land grant after the purchase so that I could subdivide it and sell large lots under glaciers to wealthy Hollywood types.

I wasn't mocking. It was an LOL of appreciation because I do think Trump has uncommon strategic genius. Was not familiar with Pericles. Looked him up. Thanks.

No problem.

Please do read up on Pericles. Truly one of the great figures of history who could have done even more if not for his untimely death

Joke all you want, but China is the reason to take this idea seriously.

You know, if 1,200 people from each state moved to Greenland, we could outpopulate them.

Offer each person 30x their current annual income.
That’s about $58,000,000,000 ... a good deal to buy the untapped area of Alaska & California combined.

The Danes spend under $4 billion a year on defense.
What would they defend it with?

It always falls to the USA to defend it. The USA governed Greenland during WWII because the Danes couldn't. Certainly makes sense for the USA to buy it and do proper defense against others.
