The Electoral College is a natural by-product of the Great Compromise, in which the highly populated states received greater representation via the House of Representatives in which the number of seats was strictly proportionate to population, and the smaller states got representation via the Senate, in which every state was equal.

I would argue that if you get rid of the EC, you have essentially given smaller states the right to secede...in a similar manner that the abrogation of the Bill of Rights (or any of them) that gave the government more power would erase the legitimacy of the government (and, thus, the reason for any particular individual to abide by laws passed by that now illegitimate government). Why? Because BOTH of those were part of the essential bargain that resulted in the Constitution being ratified in the first place. But for the EC, and the sincere promise of the BoR being passed and handed to the states for ratification as a package, arguably the Constitution would never have been ratified. These things are SO fundamental to our system of government that to get rid of them (or modify them so severely as to effectively eliminate them) would be to destroy our form of government.

If we had a pure democracy, all minorities would be enslaved or killed, which is why the second amendment, and the first, which is protected by it, is so important.

They would have to amend that dusty old Constitution to do away with the EC. Idiot doesn’t realize she doesn’t get to vote for President. She gets to vote for the electors of her state.

She was clearly missing the point in that video. That farmland doesn’t have a lot of EC votes. The more populous states have greater representation. It is fair the way it is.

What people like Ocasio-Cortez mean when they say to abolish the Electoral College is that they wish to replace the United States of America with United America.

They want to eliminate the sovereignty of states and have only one land-mass government, headed by the President. However, that's not the Constitutional framework we operate under.

I wonder if people like Ocasio-Cortez believe that if they do away with the Constitution, the existing leaders can step into some void and take over rulership. They fail to remember that the states were founded by the Declaration of Independence and predate the Constitution. The states ordained and established the Constitution. If the Constitution is abolished, the states revert back to independent sovereign territories with no national unifying framework.

What may come of this is not necessarily what left-wing liberals imagine. In a post-constitution North America, there is nothing to stop, say, California from declaring itself an independent nation. It's possible that the south from Texas to Florida to the Carolinas could reform its own union. New England might follow, creating its own nation from Maine to Maryland. Canada might follow Trump's example and offer to buy Wisconsin, Minnesota or Washington.

We'd end up with a balkanization of North America instead of a United States ruled by liberals with no constitutional guardrails.

She absolutely knows what she’s doing. She’s a good little soldier of the lefty commies. They are actively trying to break down the fiber of our constitution.

In the early history of the U.S., most states allowed only white male adult property owners to vote.

That was the ‘becoming strong, prosperous and great’ part.

AOC is not misinformed.

Leftists know exactly why we have an Electoral College and they hate it because it hinders their lust for power.

AOC is angry at the Electoral College because she couldn’t qualify to get in to it. Her Bartending grades were too low.

A good way to understand the importance of the electoral college, is to think from the perspective of the former colonies and territories that were considering becoming states in the early days of the Republic.

Why would people from low-density rural and wilderness territories want to have their interests constantly outvoted by people from high population urban centers?

They wouldn’t, of course, which is why their delegates insisted on mechanisms such as the electoral college and the 2 senator per state rule, as preconditions of ratification.

There is no doubt that ratification would have failed without the electoral college and other mechanisms that help prevent unchecked democracy, which the founders and delegates viewed as “tyranny of the majority”.

The American Revolutionaries didn’t throw off British tyranny only to submit to self imposed tyranny.

This breed of young Social Democrats is either mind-bogglingly ignorant, wantonly dishonest, or just plain evil.

I suspect it is mostly dishonesty that explains their being so far off the mark on issue after issue. Probably, they know none of their ideas will work - they just advocate the exact opposite of whatever the Republicans advocate and lie, lie, lie. Even to their own constituents!

It is incredible what passes for statesmanship, journalism and social justice these days. These Democrats will literally say and do anything.
