U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy III is facing sharp liberal blowback for eyeing a U.S. Senate seat still held by a relatively popular incumbent who has been fighting for decades for environmental and progressive causes.
The 38-year-old grandson of the slain Robert F. Kennedy floated a trial balloon that targeted Sen. Edward Markey in his quest to move up the political ladder, but a building backlash could quash those hopes.
“I don’t think Kennedy would be doing himself any favors by running at this point,” said Craig Altemose, executive director of The Better Future Project and a prominent voice in the progressive and environmental community. “It would seem a move driven by ambition rather than justice.”
Altemose, whose group leads a grassroots movement to fight climate change, said Markey has been an important climate advocate in Congress and his defeat would be seen as a huge blow for the Green New Deal, which Markey has sponsored.
“I think a lot of us would fight very hard for his election,” Altemose said. “To say Ed Markey is not the right guy in this very narrow window for the climate is bordering on heresy.”.....

The Kennedys probably expect Markey to just step aside and retire, to avoid a primary election battle. Then Kennedy junior can slide right in, similar to how actual New York Democrats stepped aside for Hillary.
