This article keeps surfacing. I've let it pass up until now, but it's worth a harrumph. Takoma is NOT a ritzy or wealthy part of DC. It is very much a transitional neighborhood. It is roughly triangular in shape. Brightwood and Petworth are to the south. The northeast boundary is Eastern Avenue. The western boundary is Georgia Avenue. People who know DC will know that Petworth, Brightwood, Eastern Avenue and Georgia Avenue are not exactly gold coast references.

I don't know where such shelters should be located, but I suspect part of the problem is size. 200 beds is a big facility. It's big enough to spook people in residential neighborhoods. Smaller and scattered site are probably better strategies.

The good people of Takoma have reason to push back. Takoma is a middle class neighborhood with some sketchy patches in a quadrant of the city that, like so much of DC, is now starting to improve. Takoma residents don't want to be used as a dumping ground. Break the project up into smaller pieces and put homes in AU Park, Spring Valley, Kalorama, Bethesda and Chevy Chase if you want to share the burden with wealthy neighborhoods.

I agree with your assessment of the economic status of the majority of residents in Takoma park, but anyone I have known who lived there was very liberal and displayed all the appropriate bumper stickers on their “green” vehicles (unless their sole mode of transportation was a bike or public transit). I would wager that those same people would stamp their vegan sandals in protest at the thought of building illegal immigrant housing in the neighborhood. They wouldn’t admit to NIMBY syndrome; rather, objections would be framed as there should be no segregation of illegal immigrants into such structures in ANYONE’S neighborhood.

I've driven up and down Georgia Avenue several times. I once stayed in Prince George's County, which at the time (late '80's) seemed to be mostly black.

Takoma Park is full of weirdos - didn’t they vote to make Takoma Park a ‘Nuclear Free Zone’ back in the Reagan years ?

Must put your irony hat back on..

The Mayor of Washington- an avowed Sanctuary City and Fairfax County VA another ‘iffy’ but represented in part by Jerry Connelly (D-VA) was suddenly granted a lot of money to maintain a shelter for the ‘innocent babies’ that were being ‘mistreated’ on the border.

As soon as the ‘announcement’ was made these two LIBERAL strongholds said ‘no way Jose’..

I thought at the time it was another PDJT ruse to get peoples panties in an uproar.

They were so rattled that they forgot to GET THE MONEY before they ‘complained’

Winning Again!!!!!!!!!!!!!
