Iran’s foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, has made a surprise appearance in Biarritz in the middle of a G7 summit where western policy towards Iran has been one of the most contentious issues.
The Iranian foreign ministry confirmed that Zarif had flown to Biarritz at the invitation of his French counterpart, Jean-Yves Le Drian. A spokesman said there would be no meetings with US officials.
A senior French diplomat confirmed that Zarif had been invited to Biarritz for talks with Le Drian, which he portrayed as the continuation of a diplomatic initiative by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, aimed at defusing tensions in the Gulf and reviving diplomacy with Iran. Zarif met Macron in Paris on Friday.
“We have been trying for several months to defuse tensions and create a pause for useful negotiations,” the French diplomat said. He added that the French were not acting as mediators for the US, and it was not the intention “at this stage” to bring together the Iranians and Americans.

The French continue to be the white-flag-waving weaklings that they are.
I suspect the rest of them were in on it. The U.S. is the only party to withdraw from the agreement. All the other signatories consider it in effect.
