All 53 Republican senators joined together Thursday to call out their Democratic colleagues for what they described as a left-wing "assault" on judicial independence in reference to a recent brief they said amounted to a threat to pack the court.
In a letter to the Supreme Court, the senators warned about the danger posed by the Democrats who recently accused the conservative-majority court of being “not well” and suggested the public could demand it be “restructured” if it does not “heal itself.” This warning was part of a brief in which they argued that a case about a New York City gun law should be dismissed as moot.
“But our colleagues did more than raise legal arguments in favor of mootness," the Senate Republicans said. "They openly threatened this court with political retribution if it failed to dismiss the petition as moot."
The brief -- filed Aug. 12 by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., and co-signed by Sens. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, Richard Durbin, D-Ill., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. – claimed that the conservative-majority court “has employed a number of methods to circumvent justiciability limits in decisions that moved the law” and warned what could happen if they do not stop.
“The implication is as plain as day: Dismiss this case or we’ll pack the Court,” the Republicans said, claiming that the Democrats’ brief is an example of how “judicial independence is under assault.”

The ‘RATS may have assessed that John Roberts is “malleable” in the face of threats. Based upon his history, they may well be right.
All 53 ... even RINO Romney. Good, maybe some of these political hacks and time-servers are waking up.
Hopefully so, I was also surprised to see they were unanimous.

Why not beat them to the punch and pack the court with conservatives after the 2020 election?
As we have learned with the election of Trump, when the Democrats don’t get their way they become mentally unhinged and will do just about anything, including threatening the judiciary.
It will be an interesting blood sport to watch the next Trump Supreme Court nomination confirmation process. I hope some Democratic Senators “figuratively die on their swords” when it happens.
I couldn’t agree more and am looking forward to watching it.
We can almost always count on Demonic-Rats to overplay their hand and in this case they haven’t disappointed us.
I have to wonder who else might think it wise to threaten or try to strong arm or intimidate the Supreme Court of the United States? LOL.
I must say I’m very proud and rather shocked by the response of all 53 Republican U.S. Senators. About time they showed unity.

When the first story came out on the Rat letter to SCOTUS in that case it was evident they had overstepped their bounds.
I was a little skeptical that the Republicans would come out strongly about the pathetic threat but they have and they’ve stuck together by unanimously signing on to their objections.
It is a pleasant surprise and I pray they continue to follow through on this and other issues.
Remember their names.

If any of us laypeople filed a brief threatening judges like these Democrat Senators did (essentially saying “you better rule the way we want you to, or else”) we would currently be sitting in a jail cell for contempt of court.
