As Dorian makes landfall on the Bahamas with winds of 185-mph, it is now the strongest hurricane to hit the Bahamas region in modern records. Only one storm in the Atlantic have ever exceeded a wind speed of 185-mph. President Trump warns it could be among the 'strongest' to hit in decades.

"Dorian has become the strongest hurricane in modern records for the northwestern Bahamas," the National Hurricane Center said on Sunday morning.

As of Sunday afternoon, Dorian was located over Great Abaco island in the Bahamas. The powerful Category 5 hurricane was packing winds of 185-mph with higher gusts over 220-mph as it made landfall.

This is the expected power of a Pacific Super Typhoon, not an Atlantic Hurricane.

It's a real screamer and has surprised many professionals.

This is obviously Donald Trump’s fault, because he doesn’t believe in man-made global climate change.

Therefore the United States taxpayer must foot the bill for all damage.

This one scares me, and I’ve never been scared of storms. Rode out one that criss-crossed FL a number of years back that wasnt even close to this powerful.

Is there a Category 6? What wind speeds would be required for Category 6?

YES!! Send all money to The Paris Accords!

In fact, I’m all for collecting 100% of the untaxed portion of ‘Global Warming’ Democrats’ paychecks and sending their money elsewhere.

Like to American citizens that need the help.

Horrific storm and sadly there will likely be a lot of casualties. There are very few structures that could withstand those winds and damage!

Prayers up for the people in the Bahamas.

If you live where hurricanes go, you should expect hurricanes.
Weve had cat 5 canes before, well have them again.
We dont have 1/4 mile skyscrapers in miami because of the sand in the ground and . . . yep . . . regular hurricanes.
Stop the unprecedentef, in modern times and all the rest.
Aug to Nov is Hurricane season in the area. Been that way G-d made this round, bluegreen marble.

220???

Nope...not unless it is up at cloud level...land and buildings and people matter...this is hype and landfall U.S. will be Cat 2-3...IF A and barrier stuff always damages the formation.

It is dangerous, but the hype is hard to take...has my mom panicking in Wilmington NC.

I landed in Guam after a typhoon with identical wind speeds and the devastation was hard to comprehend. Every tree on the windward side of the island was broken off, the entire jungle forest was stripped. A 50 foot PT boat was picked out of the harbor and set down across highway one.

Prayers up on this one.

Flipping between the Weather Channel & Accuweather...it seemed like Weather Channel was disappointed when the model projected the storm turning away from a direct hit on West Palm Beach aka MarA Lago...They seemed to be holding out hope that Dorian could still turn west slamming WPB as they’ve been predicting for the last 5 days....

Saffir–Simpson scale "Categories 6 and 7".

This has been suggested. The reason for not having a Category 6 or 7 is the scale measures damage to man made structures. No building can take 160+ mph winds for more than a few seconds without serious damage. Once a building is completely wrecked, how wrecked it is no longer matters to how much damage it can take.

Port Nassau web cams are 100 miles south of Freeport, where the hurricane is. It’s like watching a Providence R.I. webcam to view a Boston weather event.
