Santa Cruz island is the ‘big one’ visible from Santa Barbara for those unfamiliar with the area.

Yeah, either fuel for the engines or propane for the galley.

Not looking good for potential survivors at this point.

It may not matter. The deck layout on the boat suggests that the only access to the berthing areas was aft — where the fire seemed to have started. If there was an explosion there then escape may not have been possible. But this is speculation until the crew is debriefed we won’t really know.

CNN reporting the boat sank. Only 20 yard off shore in 60 fsw. Sounds like the Coast Guard may have had it under tow because the initial reports had the boat 20 miles off shore.

Lots of things can make a boat explode, primarily bulge fumes.

All five crew members survived, sounds like all the divers were killed.

Shocking.

Fuel fumes igniting. Propane leaking and settling in the bilge. Lots of stuff can go wrong. There’s a reason why USCG inspections are so stringent.

This was a VIOLENT explosion, typical of a propane tank explosion. I believe propane is ODORLESS, therefore it could've already leaked into sleep compartments below.. Remnants of boat are torn apart, ripped apart from explosion. 34 dead on a 75 ft. boat merely 60 feet from shore is shocking. Perhaps the 34 were rendered unconscious from the lateral shock wave and the crew above were able to jump ship.

Prayers for victims families.

I don’t know if anyone has confirmed that the fire started with an explosion. An explosion may have occurred after the fire began.

1. Very sad and I do feel for all friends and family and boat owner.
2. This day and age I suspect foul play by some leftist politico immediately or illegal alien, especially Muslim.
3. I immediately want to know who benefits, e.g., any former Clinton associates on board on manifest?

That is a good question because there has been boat tragedies but it never got a response from numerous politicians unlike this one. Kamala Harris, Ted Lieu, Diane Feinstein tweeted out on this boat tragedy. Perhaps more lives were lost in this incident than others.

Fuel leakage being vaporized from poor maintenance. It happens all the time. Years ago, I had a 25' Sun Bridge docked in Huntington Beach. A couple slips down a similar boat exploded. The cause was a fuel leak in the engine compartment that built up vapors and ignited spontaneously in the heat of summer at it's flash point. Yes, fuel vapors can do that if the conditions are right. Ask any Fireman.

In the Navy, I was shown you could drop a cigarette in a gallon of JP5 and it would go out. Confine that same fuel to build vapors and it will ignite/explode. Just like brush fires, it's not always the plant that ignites, but the vapors that build over the summer months. That's why the worst place forest fire-fighters can be is at the bottom of a hill/ravine when the fire comes over the ridge. The fuel vapors are there and will flash fire. I think that is what happened to the Prescott Granite Mountain Hot-Shots in the movie, "Only The Brave". Good movie but heart-breaking - wiped out the entire crew.
