What causes a boat to explode?

As I understand it, from working on a fishing boat long ago, a propane leak all ends up in the bilge—and a boat’s machinery is in the bilge area as well. Not saying this was the cause, but you asked how such a thing could happen.

Yeah, either fuel for the engines or propane for the galley.
