[June 18, 2018} Armed civilian kills gunman, stops shooting spree at Walmart in Washington state

A gunman who opened fire inside a Walmart in Washington state and injured at least two people during carjacking attempts was fatally shot by one of two armed civilians on Sunday evening, according to police.

The Thurston County coroner identified the dead suspect as Tim O. Day, 44, though police said they were still piecing together the full story of what happened at the Tumwater, Wash. Walmart.

About 5 p.m. Pacific Time, authorities received a call about a possibly drunk driver heading the wrong way on a main road near a local high school, said Laura Wohl, Tumwater police public information officer.

As police sped to the scene, they received a second call about a carjacking with shots fired. When officers arrived, they found a 16-year-old girl with unspecified non-life-threatening injuries but no suspect. They quickly located the stolen car but once again no suspect.

At about 5:30 p.m., they started getting numerous calls of shots fired in and around a nearby Walmart. Wohl said they later confirmed that the man doing the shooting was the same person involved in the carjacking.

She said the man entered the Walmart, fired shots at a display case and then went into the parking lot.

There he attempted to carjack another vehicle, shooting an occupant in it at least twice. Apparently frustrated in his effort, the gunman then attempted a second carjacking.

At that point, Wohl said, two armed civilians in the parking lot confronted the suspect, one of whom fatally shot the man.

I don't know which is bigger news, the shooting or WaPo reporting on good guys with guns stopping it.

They wont report much on this because armed citizens stopped a bad guy with a gun. Not the spin they want to spin.

I didn’t notice that when I went to post it, I hit a paywall and had to copy the text excerpt from the other site I saw it on.

That’s why I didn’t include the date when I posted.

It needs to be posted because all stories about armed citizens stopping an armed and dangerous criminal need to be reported far and wide across this country. It is a year old, but it is still an example of what an armed citizen can accomplish against the bad guys.

I agree but I thought it was new when I posted it and I would have preferred to post it labeled as a flashback if I had noticed.

Imagine if all the instances of citizens drawing a firearm, but not using it because the bad guy decided to leave immediately were recorded and broadcast. Pity that those situations are not recorded. I have 5 such occurrences over the years.

Well, many of us DON'T "live near there" and didn't hear about it.

Thanks for posting it, Farcesensitive.

An annoying trend is websites posting very old news items as if they are just breaking. The articles, naturally, are ones that will attract the most hits from casual readers. Such as at a sports news site “Team A trades Athlete B to Team C” without noting that that “B” has been with Team C for a year or so. My guess is it’s a way to fill out the webpage without having to do any actual work.

Maybe.

There’s a lot I miss, not being on FR 24/7.

If my name was in the comments section, then yes, I could say for sure that I saw it and forgot.

As it is, maybe I saw it, maybe not.

Either way, I don’t remember it, but I consider it good to be reminded of success once in a while.

That never made the news in our area, outside of the few who saw the referenced article.

No doubt.

I don’t mind repeats from time to time either, just to compare comments now and then.

I think that can be more interesting than the article itself.
