Beto O’Rourke is flailing about on the campaign trail in the race for the 2020 Democrat nomination. He has nothing to lose at this point. In what world, though, did he think it was a good idea to pick a fight with Meghan McCain over gun ownership? Robert Francis is way out of his league.
The new season of ABC’s The View began this week and right away Meghan McCain came under fire, so to speak, during a discussion about gun violence and mass shootings. The topic led to the inevitable back and forth on gun control. Meghan McCain was on her own. Fortunately, she’s up to the task. Abby Huntsman, by the way, sounded like the liberal hosts on the subject. When the gun-grabbing part of the discussion began, McCain said in no uncertain terms that she isn’t giving up her guns. Huntsman jumped on board with the liberal women who were blaming Republicans for not acting on gun control. McCain, an NRA member, spent time on her break from the show in Wyoming, shooting, among other activities. She specifically pointed to Beto’s mandatory gun buyback program proposal as a non-starter for her.

Reading the article, I’m glad Ms. McCain stood up for the 2nd Amendment, but I’d put it more strongly. I’m not really even a gun “enthusiast”, but I most certainly DO understand what the 2A is about, and as a good citizen, if anyone tries to confiscate my guns, and (most of) my neighbors’ guns, it is not a matter of “may”, the grabbers WILL have a modern day Lexington and Concord on their hands.
Or, perhaps Ms. McCain should ask Beto onto the show, ask him if he intends to confiscate her “assault rifle” (I’ve not checked to see if she’s said she has one, but I bet she does, or can, simply to make the point) and then quote a little Patrick Henry to him.

However, a more persuasive argument, and less radical, in a fashion, would be to simply point out that while not part of the text, the 2A essentially says that in the US, the government shall and does trust the people. Trust, of course, goes both ways. If a gov’t restricts the 2A, it is essentially saying it does not trust the people. Mistrust also generally runs both ways...
