I remember it well. To be fair, Zimmerman's head was getting slammed by Martin when he pulled the trigger. Goetz went after one attacker when the imminent threat had passed - "You seem to be all right, here's another" Goetz told police he said to the attacker in his statement, though later he clarified that's what he THOUGHT but didn't verbalize it.

Nonetheless, Goetz was convicted only of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree. He walked on the murder and other serious charges.

As he should have but he was harassed by the media (in particular, the freak Jimmy Breslin) to this day. NYC was a cesspool at that time and I still remember a black woman in my office jumping up and down clapping her hands when the story broke in the papers. That’s how fed up we were.
