Interesting euphemism, "holy day." It's a holiday to remember when Ali was murdered on the steps of the Golden Mosque in Najaf. He was assumed to be Mohammed's heir. When he was assassinated, it led to the current Sunni/Shia schism. It basically has no religiosity to it; it's all about men and power over others and one group not getting their shot at running the show 1400 years ago.
IIRC, Ashura is the holiday with a lot of self cutting and other forms of self-flagellation.
