BET founder Robert Johnson on Trump: ‘I give the president credit for doing positive things’

President Donald Trump has done “positive things” for the economy that have greatly benefited African Americans, said Robert Johnson, the successful Democratic businessman who started the BET television network nearly 40 years ago.

“For African Americans, the trend continues to be favorable,” Johnson said Thursday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” “There used to be an old saying, ‘When White America catches a cold, African Americans get pneumonia.’ It’s going the opposite way now. White unemployment is going down, African American unemployment is going down. That’s a plus-plus that you can’t argue with.”

“I give the president credit for doing positive things; when I see a president doing positive things, particularly for African Americans,” added Johnson, who made history as America’s first black billionaire when he sold BET to Viacom in 2001. Shortly after the sale, he started the investment firm The RLJ Cos. (Johnson is no longer on the Forbes billionaires list.)

Johnson, who describes himself as a friend of the president, actually supported Hillary Clinton for the White House in 2016. Since then, Johnson has been complimentary of the Trump economy. Shortly after the election, Johnson said he turned down a position in Trump’s Cabinet, not over politics but because he said he could not deal with the government red tape.

Johnson seems like a good guy. He gets it.

"Johnson is no longer on the Forbes billionaires list."

That's because his wife Sheila got half of it in the divorce. :-)

Oh no. He’s off the plantation.

I respect his position, that as a Hillary supporter, he has seen the actions and results from this president, and has changed his opinion.

I think the 2020 election will be different from 2016, because in 2016 Trump was a political newcomer, and even many Republican/conservative voters had doubts about him .

But in 2020, Trump will have a record to run on, a record of some considerable achievements.

I think that very few Trump voters from 2016 regret their vote. On the other hand, there are some who didn’t support Trump but will vote to reelect him.

It will be a close election, but Trump has some considerable strengths as a reelection candidate. It’s odd the polls just don’t reflect that.

It’s not odd when you realize the Democrats, who run the polls, use the polls to shape thought, behavior and opinion. It has nothing to do with measuring opinion.

Sure will, and he wouldn’t have been yesterday.

Give the man credit for speaking the truth when it would be a lot more comfortable for him to just go along with the hate-Trump crowd.

There is no reason for him to make this statement unless he believed it was true and needed to be said.

I live in a very diverse Blue county in SE PA. My neighbors to the left of me and directly across the street are both single, successful black ladies. I don’t talk politics anymore since my car was vandalized 4 times in as many weeks during the McCain/Palin campaign, but I’m not getting that radiating hatred from them that I did when BHO ran. Hope they sit out the 2020 election and ride the wave of prosperity.

This guy was on my short list of Americans I would have preferred to see as our “first black president.”

(Johnson is no longer on the Forbes billionaires list.)

He went through a costly divorce and his ex-wife opened a spa in or near expensive, conservative "horse country" Loudon County, VA, where Linda Tripp also has a home and business, and Jeckie Kennedy also had a second home during the White House years.
