State conservation enforcement officers are investigating the destruction of four endangered Hawaiian vines in the Mauna Loa Forest Reserve near Puu Huluhulu, the site where protesters have been blocking Mauna Kea Access Road for the last two months.
Additionally, officials with the Department of Land and Natural Resources said Thursday theres evidence other rare plants in the area have been trampled.
Intentional or not, this damage is happening and its very concerning, DLNR Chairwoman Suzanne Case said. Theres really just no way to have hundreds of people every day, often thousands, in sensitive natural areas like Puu Huluhulu and the adjoining areas off Mauna Kea Access Road without this kind of harm resulting.
Case and Hawaii island members of her department described the impacts Thursday at a news conference in Hilo.
What on earth is a “TMT” protest?
Is there a Star Advertiser link? Mahalo!
Bkmk.
all dispersed and gone within 24hrs
Odd that it didn’t come thru
or my bad
I watched the video of the State authorities bulldozing an unauthorized structure on DHHL property. Bystanders were singing. What’s going on?
Ever hear the old adage “ Give them an inch and they will take a mile” ?
Governor Ige gave them an inch. Thye then took a mile.
The Hawaiian sovereigntyista had screwed and naled a Hawaiian flag to the door of the illegal unsafe unpermitted structure they had built and which was then going to be demolished by the State. A State sheriff deputy had to use a circular saw to cut through the locks in the doors, cutting the Hawaii flag fastened to the door as well . It was a set-up and now the sovereigntyistas have yet another thing to go ballistic and psycho about. $5000 reward for the name of the deputy offered, so they can death threat against him (see FB Hawaii Gov. presser video included in this posting)
I also understand about the TMT now. Thanks.
4 damaged vines?
In Hawaii you can watch the plants grow in real time.
The backwards natives think another telescope in the pinnacle of the mountain, 13,600 feet in the air where they never go, will upset some pagan god.
Can’t have whitey quietly studying the universe unless the savages are properly bribed first.
If there is anything more low impact and good for a community than a telescope, high on a nearby mountain, I cannot imagine what it is.
There are vines and there are vines
These are critically endangered native Hawaiian endemic vines
with very few left in existence.
What likely happened is Kia’i (protester) families go wandering around in nature up there and their stupid unattended kids go pulling and yanking at anything that catches their attention. Including these vines. Most of these folks are not exactly well educated or attuned to nature whatsoever. They are coming over from Oahu to enjoy the experience and to be able to say that they camped at Mauna Kea. Very little monitoring is going on. There could be a dozen scenarios as to how, why, this happened, but this is likely one of them. Another is conscious intentional vandalism, out of meanness and ignorance.
Issue Logo t-shirt and cap sales are booming. Along with sales of cheapo Hawaiian and nativist flags
Thanks. I was wondering what TMT meant and now I know (thirty meter telescope).
