Personal-injury lawyer John Morgan has spent millions in a push to get a $15 per hour minimum wage measure on the ballot in Florida.
Amid concerns working class pay has not kept pace with costs of living, seven states and Washington, D.C., have voted to boost their minimum wages to $15 per hour.
John Morgan has gathered the 766,200 signatures needed to let voters decide whether to raise the wage next year. Now, the Orlando-based personal injury attorney waits on the state Supreme Court to decide if it appears on the ballot.
Morgan, who runs a firm employing more than 500 lawyers, has enjoyed ballot success in the past. He piled money into a successful 2016 ballot measure to legalize medical marijuana.
And what makes me hurt the most is watching other people hurt, Morgan said in a phone interview. And I dont think that politicians really give a f---, really give a f---, about other people hurting.
Morgan argues current laws allow businesses to pay slave wages.
Key business groups in Florida have lined up against the initiative. Hotel and restaurant groups have warned the pay floor could lead to lost service jobs.
The people they are trying to help we believe will get hurt with this particular ballot initiative, said Carol Dover, president and CEO of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association.
She also raised the prospect of businesses passing costs on to customers and questioned how much consumers would tolerate.
Steve Schale, a Democratic strategist who ran former President Barack Obamas 2008 Florida campaign, said, People count out John Morgan at their own peril. Hes relentless and tireless, he said.

Who is not going to vote themselves a raise if given the opportunity to do so?
The rats have perfected getting high rat turnout ballot initiatives on November ballots. Between that and vote harvesting 20 is going to be tough to win.
They don’t realize they can vote for a raise but what will happen is they will be replaced with a machine or replaced with an illegal alien who will be paid under the table.
Anyone in FLA who don’t see this high end greedy, ambulance chaser looking to make it to the Governor’s mansion and eventually the DC swamp? He was behind the marijuana legality issue because he had a high stake in the processing plant. All I see here is a lust for $$$$$$ and power. If he is pouring $$$$ into anything, its only to make even more $$$$$$. He can go #LAW up his.....
Note to folks in FL who want to fight this: Come to Upstate NY with and drive through towns large and small. Take video of all the empty retail square footage, the derelict shops and restaurants. The “For Rent” and “For Sale” signs in windows lining downtown streets.
Then plaster the video all over social media and ask Floridians, especially those who’ve escaped from NY, if that’s what they really want.
How hurt are the people gonna be when they are laid off, hours cut, benefits cancelled, or replaced by automation????
If your toddler picks up your phone and starts pressing one number over and over, eventually it will connect with this guy.
I will be voting NO on this.
We have far too many voters in Florida who think it is ‘cool’ that they can be a ‘legislator-for-a day’ and vote to approve these nonsensical amendments to the Florida constitution.
A Florida constitutional amendment requires a 60% approval and there are conservative voters who will vote for a $15 minimum wage because their nephew Johnny needs a pay raise.
ake video of all the empty retail square footage, the derelict shops and restaurants. The For Rent and For Sale signs in windows lining downtown streets.......................... WHAT? Where are those 250,000 jobs Hillary promised back in 2000 via “her” connections? She wouldn’t lie! Tyson did open a chicken processing plant in western NY, but were the locals hired?
Its already showing. Go to Burger King and order a soft drink. 1.99 now. They have to make it up some where.
I went to my local (western NY) Home depot over the weekend. A few weeks ago, it had 6 checkout lanes - not all staffed all the time of course, now it has all self-checkout lanes. No cashiers at all. one employee up front to help customers as needed.
Lol... Chic-fil-a, $16.50 an hr, starting pay.....
“For the People.” Oh, and muh wallet. Sadly, I thought I’d never have to hear his irritating voice again when we left FL but lo and behold I saw this POS in an ad for some class action suit here in Reno. Grrrrrrrrr! Oh well. He doesn’t look good/healthy in this pic.
I hate self-checkout with a passion. It’s ok for a couple of items, but for any order over a half-dozen items, it usually screws up. Very frustrating.
There is zero historical data backing up the assertions that increasing the minimum wage pushes up inflation and increases unemployment. None.
There is no factual data backing up your assertion that raising the minimum wage pushes up inflation.
Why did they do that since minimum wage is presently $7.25/hr and hasn’t changes since 2009?
The people who lost their jobs when Seattle restaurants closed or cut their hours and staff would beg to differ with you.
