Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Felipe Vazquez has been arrested on charges of computer pornography - solicitation of a child and providing obscene material to minors, authorities said Tuesday.

Vazquez is being held in the Allegheny County Jail, awaiting extradition to Lee County, Florida.

FDLE agents, with assistance from the Pennsylvania State Police, today arrested Felipe Vazquez, 28, of Saint Cloud, FL, for one count of computer pornography - solicitation of a child and one count of providing obscene material to minors. Vazquez, a baseball player with the Pittsburgh Pirates, was taken into custody in Pittsburgh this morning on a felony warrant out of Lee County, Florida.

FDLE’s investigation began in August of this year after agents obtained information that Vazquez had a reported sexual relationship with a 13-year old female victim who resides in Lee County. The victim, now 15 years of age, was continuing to have a relationship with Vazquez via text messaging and received a video in July from him in which he is shown performing a sex act. Additionally, Vazquez allegedly sent the victim text messages suggesting they would meet for sex after his baseball season was over.

FDLE agents and Pennsylvania State Police served a search warrant today at Vazquez’s apartment in Pittsburgh. Several electronic devices were seized and will be examined as part of this investigation. Additional charges are dependent upon completion of forensic exams.

Vazquez was taken to the Allegheny County Jail, where he will face extradition to Lee County, Florida.

I hear ya. Where I live all of the registered Republican voters could meet in a booth at Dennys.

Most guys making a few million dollars per game played, actually show up for practice every day and don’t take every Wednesday off either, but I digress....

What I can’t understand are women, and let alone little girls, running around wearing shirts with this rapists number and name on them....

It would be a cold day in hell before I would wear, let alone have my daughter wear a shirt with his name on it, yet folks around this town do it all the time...

As far as I’m concerned the Steelers might as well sign Kirkpatrick.. They already have a rapist quarter back, and had no problem hiring another one convicted of dog fighting as well... So, I don’t see how signing that putz is any lower than what they already do.

I don’t follow the financial aspects of baseball. But is there a salary cap or floor? Are the Pirates making a profit, in spite of being one of those so called small market teams?

He predict that he will be a First Round Draft Pick in the Prison Yard Baseball League.

- No salary cap
- No salary floor

There is a luxury tax where teams like the Dodgers and Yankees who spend lavishly on payroll have to kick-in bribe money to teams like the Pirates to keep their mouths shut and not complain.

The Pirates are privately held and do not open their books, but rumor is that they are fantastically profitable. They draw decent crowds to their (publicly funded) ballpark because it’s a pleasant night out. And the owner, Bob Nutting, collects all of that luxury tax money from the big teams. Since he does not spend it on payroll it apparently goes into dividends for his partners, or gets reinvested in his resort properties.

I think there is an MLB minimum salary of $555,000 for 2019 but no player in the league is currently making that little.

Maybe back in the day. I don’t think it’s cause for comment any more. Prison culture degrades along with society at large, too.

I have a friend whose nephew is a sparingly used bench player in the American League. I think he is paid something close to that.

If societal convention can ban the Gary Glitter song, Hey , from being used in stadiums they can demand child perv pitchers be banned from baseball.

Thanks for info.

I’m sure the business end of sports is different than some other businesses. But, it sounds as if the Pirates, and other perpetual also ran teams, could “reinvest” in the business, and field competitive teams. It sounds as if they choose not to be as competitive as they could.

Precisely.

You see t-shirts around town which say “Spend Nutting, Get Nutting”. They don’t win because he refuses to put his profits into better players.

That’s what I think. Today’s animals don’t care if someone hurt a child. It’s like how “stand up to a bully and he’ll back down” has gone out the window in many cases. Stand up now and they’ll get several friends together and gut you.

I don’t recall the whole story about why he changed his last name to Vazquez but rumor has it that his sister gave him the idea because they were both abused as children.

You’d think he’d be suspended given how the serious the charges are.

Is there a chart somewhere showing the percent of pro athletes’ sex crimes vs. the rest of the US?

The team has suspended him. My suspicion though is that he’s suspended with pay. Baseball is a union gig after all.
