Privilege is a substantial escalation compared with what the White House asserted.
Compare the sequence from two whole months ago, on the census/citizeship kerfuffle:
On Tuesday, the Justice Department had warned Cummings in a letter that it would recommend the president assert executive privilege if the House voted to hold the officials in contempt of Congress.
In that case, Attorney General Barr and Secretary Ross refused to give testimony too.
The Lewandowski hearing was unncessary. All the evidence the committee needs on the "Lewandowski was Trump's messenger boy to ask Sessions to unrecuse" incident, the committe has. It's all in the Mueller report. If that incident is the crime of obstruction of justice, then impeach already.
As it stands, the DEMs show themselves to be unprincipled - they assert the president is a criminal, then do nothing but talk about it. They already have their smoking gun. Or so they say.
The whole thing yesterday was about someting that everyone admitted did not happen. A message didn’t get delivered. And in my mind it was a perfectly fine message: potus wanted Sessions to unrecuse himself...something repeatedly talked about at the time.
But the message was NOT delivered.
