Journalist John Solomon leaves the Hill to start own media outlet

Journalist John Solomon has rocked the Washington media world by announcing his departure from the Hill newspaper and the Hill.TV brand he created to start his own media firm.

In a memo to his team, Solomon wrote, “After two-plus amazing years at Hill.TV I am moving on next month to build my own startup media company.”

He did not reveal any details about his future plans for an online media site.

In his memo, he praised the Hill, his TV group, and Capitol Hill Publishing Chairman James A. Finkelstein. “With Jimmy's vision and your continued great work, I am confident Hill.TV is destined for even greater success in the future,” Solomon wrote.

Long an investigative reporter for the Associated Press, the 52-year-old reporter over the past decade has worked to push the Washington Times into profitability, started Circa, was president of Packard Media Group, and also headed the Center for Public Integrity, which investigates politicians and funding.

The well-traveled Solomon was an investigative reporter at the Washington Post before he was named executive editor of the Washington Times in 2008.

In July 2017, he was named executive vice president of the Hill.

He has become well-known on TV, frequently appearing on Sean Hannity’s Fox show to discuss the Russia-Trump investigation and related stories.

Assuming that there are any conservative oriented media execs to hire. Probably a small pool in that world, they would get blackballed.

The whole point of starting your own is that you're immune to blackballing.

Unless you're talking about cocktail parties, in which case you throw your own.

Then the fight becomes who was seen at whose party, and the reporting on the various sites that cover it.

Gotta start somewhere. No point in talking one's self out of it before it even starts. That's the GOPe way of doing things.

Well you have to have money to start your own. And if you have access to money but no control or experience running something, you can end up in the same mess that Mark Steyn finds himself in.

I never understood the fit between The Hill & Solomon.

Actually it's a great fit when you think about it. That's why none of the MSM have attacked Solomon because of the Hill.

It's one of those opposites attract things.

Trump can’t create his own media outlet while he is President.

The accusations of having created a Ministry of Propaganda would be endless, and it wouldn’t just be from Democrats.

YES Don Jr. has talked about it, I think they are making the move AND I think they will be VERY SUCCESSFUL!!! Fox went by the way side when the kids took over, Don Jr. is a SOLID conservative if he takes this project on there will be NOTHING liberal about the programming, I hope they purchase OANN and get them on ALL cable providers!!!

Maybe. I would hope that Solomon had that lined up before making the announcement.

RE: Steyn, I thought he hitched his wagon to Levin TV, but Levin, et. al., didn't produce so Steyn sued and won. Not sure what he planned to do with the settlement, but I admit to not following it further.

I dunno if the Steyn vs CRTV/BlazeTV lawsuit is finished yet or not. Court cases can drag on for years. But it’s a shining example of how hard it is to develop a new media outlet, in this case with everyone supposedly on the same side politically.

I wish Hannity would let Solomon bring forth his breaking news rather than cutting in ALL THE TIME to spout his repetitive memorized lists. Come on Sean.

Evidently you’re not aware of the Emoluments Clause issue that Trump’s enemies are already badgering him with.

Having a family media empire created while he’s in office would just give the Left another opportunity to cause trouble for him.

Steyn won a $4 million arbitration award against Blaze TV. Blaze TV failed to meet the conditions of his employment. Steyn was also recently awarded $1 million in attorney fees.

Levin joined up with Blaze TV and wasn’t happy that Steyn yes Blaze TV.

Steyn resisted becoming involved with Blaze TV because he told them he has additional interests he didn’t want to give up. Blaze TV wouldn’t take no for an answer and agreed to demands they had no chance of meeting. Blaze failed to meet the terms of the contract, so Steyn sues them and won.

How much MORE trouble could the possibly cause for him, h9w much WORSE could it possibly get for him, I don’t think he gives a damn, he gets the trouble regardless, SO if his son wants to start a media outlet I say GO FOR IT!!!

I think it may mean that the FISA abuse investigation will be HUGE and Solomon wants unimpeded authority to continue his work on it (ie, blow it wide open!), and reap enormous credibility, fame, and all that goes with it.
