New Mexico’s free-college plan could be a game-changer for student debt in America (Math is hard)

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham unveiled a plan Wednesday to make public college tuition free for all state residents.

It’s a “an absolute game-changer” for the state, according to Grisham, a Democrat. Experts say it may well provide an example of good practice for state and local officials across the country who are crafting their own free college programs.

If state lawmakers approve the proposal, the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship program will pay for all state-college tuition and fees that aren’t already covered by federal grants and a state lottery. That’s an unpaid gap ranging from 25% to 40% of a student’s tuition bill. The program doesn’t cover students’ living expenses.

The program could underwrite tuition for the estimated 55,000 students at the state’s 29 public universities and community colleges as soon as fall 2020. The program will cost between $25 and $35 million a year. The state will pay for the program through its general fund, a Grisham spokeswoman told MarketWatch. She noted oil and gas revenue have been boosting the fund in recent years.

Someone please explain to me how paying tuition for 55,000 students is only going to cost "$25 to $35 million a year".

The number is *easily* 500% more than that - at $10K per year (which even at that seems pretty low), that comes out to $550M/year...

Don’t know why these schools aren’t run entirely by students, except for professors who actually teach classes. Students would receive real world experiences working up from cafeteria workers to administrators.

Of course the democrat party wants to fund/control the state universities. How better to indoctrinate the sheep with their socialist agenda.

I wish they would stop using the word “Free” Anytime a politician promises to give away anything for”Free” they should have to say “Tax-Payer Funded” instead!

According to the article the state is to pay the amount which is not already covered by grants, Etc. So the State is not paying the entire amount of the tuition just the amount that now must be paid for by the students and is not covered by any programs.

I guess everyone who wants to send their kids to college will be moving to New Mexico for all that free stuff. Hope there are plenty of jobs to support mom and dad.

I'm sure that "game change" will take the quality from this:

This isn’t college anymore - this is extended public education and an outdated mode of learning at that.

In addition this is nothing more than an illegal political kickback to universities and teachers unions (Democrats)

Once, long ago, I was taking Intro to Economics. The professor was berating another student for basically not even trying. He said, “You’re just wasting your tuition money!”

The student replied, “What do I care? It’s Daddy’s money and he’s got plenty.”

Multiply that by 55,000 and tell me what you’ve accomplished with “free” college.

It’s not free if the ‘RATS steal money from the taxpayers to pay for it. It’s only free if the colleges don’t charge any tuition and all of the “perfessers” are true socialists who teach classes voluntarily and only receive donations thrown in a hat by their “students”.

Random thought. Does anyone from outside New Mexico actually travel to New Mexico to go to college? All the other states around it have major universities and it makes sense, but not New Mexico. LOL

My daughter earned an associates degree from a Maryland community college.

It was a huge incentive for her to get all A’s when she found out that she got a full refund of her tuition.

We didn’t know about it till after she got the first check.

I can’t stand big government programs but if you’re bound and determined, this is a far better way.

Pay first, succeed and get the reward later.

We also decided early on that we were not going to pay for our kids college. I don’t know where that insane idea came from that parents are responsible to do so.

We loaned them money as needed and with one exception, it’s all been paid back.

One of our kids paid all his college debt within one year. That’s what happens when you replace ___________ studies with ____________ engineering.

The politicians are always fighting the last war.

Universities have become bloated dinosaurs—in a generation these brick and mortar propaganda and credential factories will be replaced by tech solutions that cheaply and efficiently train young people.

Hey—I can dream, right?
