The family of slain mobster James Whitey Bulger intends to file a $200 million wrongful death claim against the government today over the murder of the onetime Southie serial killer who was beaten to death in a West Virginia prison.
The family said the legal filing was part of its effort to discover why the 89-year-old was was beaten to death in less than 24 hours after being put in general population at U.S. Penitentiary Hazelton, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Bulger was murdered in his cell at the notorious Hazelton lockup on Oct. 30. He died from blunt force injuries of the head, according to his death certificate obtained by the Herald, and died within minutes. He was buried in St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury.

Prisoners who are inconvenient to the FBI and other DS actors don’t live long in prison.
FINALLY an FBI employee gets a fitting end.
The Rat got what was coming.
he deserved it?
There really ought to be due process for capital punishment.
Good!
I’m no Whitey Bulger fan but the FBI is corrupt - just as corrupt as the Winter Hill gang.
They’re both totally corrupt.
That takes a pair of balls!
That mass murderer!
His family should have changed their name, including his brother.
Obviously, Whitey isn’t a sympathetic character. And $200 million is an absurd figure. With that said, should an infamous 89-year-old man, no matter who is or what he’s done, have been put into the general prison population? They imposed a de facto death sentence on him.
I’m sure they’re going to share it with the families of all his murder victims right?
Howie gets his credibility in commenting on the Bulgers partially because one of Whitey's henchmen tried to kill him some years back.
Herr Mueller and his right hand Wiseman are very happy Whitey is dead.
Yep. If they will do it to Whitey Bulger they will do it to anyone, including you.
Should have been done when he as thirty five.
Indeed. I fear some folks are missing an important point. Sure, it’s easy to say “Whitey deserved it” (although one would hope that Due Process would get more support around here). But the fact that Whitey had ties to Robert Mueller and could potentially have spilled some beans on gross levels of FBI corruption should not be overlooked. Whitey’s death was very convenient for people like Mueller. I would prefer that Whitey were alive and talking.

No mystery...he pissed somebody off.
Gods mills grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly small.
The beating was probably arranged by that scumbag bulger family in preparation of this very foreseeable lawsuit. Always angling for elicit gain. Lets just see who pops out of the woodwork as facilitating players. They still have lots of pull.
Isn’t the amount you expect to receive in a wrongful death suit supposed to be related to the amount of income one could expect that individual to reasonably make in the expected remaining years of his life?
Was this guy expected to earn even $2,000 the rest of his life?
$200 million?
LOL
Another dime store attorney raises his ugly head.
They beat on him for 23+ hours? Surely some guard should have taken note.
One of the problems is, if Bulger’s family prevails in this suit, is that the people who made the decision to put Bulger in the prison’s “general population” will not have to suffer any consequence of their actions.
We poor suffering taxpayers will, however.
Something ain’t right!
