Yes but there is a difference. Socialism is a deception and communism isn't. Socialism gives the pretense of private ownership. Yes you can own your own home but the state will tell you how you're going to live in it. Yes you can own your factory but the state will control the production process.

Communism make no pretense of any of that. The state owns everything. Both however offer no private ownership of speech or thought or association. But socialism is the most poisonous because of the pretense of private ownership. That's why it's so easy to fool starry eyed and frankly stupid college kids with it.
