For many that contempt mutates into a bigoted hatred for people that that the hater has never met and knows absolutely nothing about
This is best exemplified by a reporter who was a card carrying member of the self proclaimed elite. Seems he went on the campaign trail to document the ignorant, bigoted and boorish behavior of the Trump supporting mouth breathers in small town fly over country
Came back with a new attitude and glowing reports of all the truly wonderful and talented people he met along the way. Totally different than his false and bigoted preconceptions that make up the conventional wisdom of our elite
Kind of reminds me of a story from one of my more snarky friends who really had contempt for his assumed stereotypical caricature of Southerners, particularly men, popular in elite PC culture.
Said friend had his life saved on the side of a road on a rainy night in very back woods West Virginia by one of those bible thumping, gun toting good old boys with 1/8 his education and a financial net worth probably less than the replacement cost for one of the wheels on his expensive European sport sedan. After saving his bacon, this southern gentleman insisted on diving back to his shop to get his tow truck, towed the guys car to his shop and worked all night to get the car back on the road so my friend could make it to an important business meeting. And refused to accept any payment for his services
Friend was literally in tears when he told me the story because he was so ashamed of himself for his bigoted and snarky comments over the years for people that he never met and when he did finally meet them he discovered they not so all what his prejudices had led him to believe
Yeah. On our first night here - during a deluge - we drove into a ditch because there was no visibility when backing up. Before we knew it, cars were pulled over and men - and women - black and white - were trying to drag the car out. Finally, the smartest person called the cops and they dragged us out. The policeman was kindness himself. He put me in his warm SUV because he could see I was practically in shock. When our car survived with absolutely no damage, people started cheering. That was my first night in my new home. Aside from ditches - which are all over the place - it’s swell.
By the way, the author apparently agrees that most southerners are kind and hospitable - just that underneath it they are really all a bunch of racist bastards. How does the south prove a negative?? It doesn’t.
You get the sense that Tony Horwitz went out of his way to find those 2-3 Klan members living somewhere, and then wrote as if they were representative of a whole area or town.
They are also taught to surrender to every anxiety and feeling. Coping is a curse word. Everything gets fixed with pills. They are shielded to the point that they never learn to persevere.
Most of all, they learn that Hate is a virtue so long as you hate yourself and people like you.
“You get the sense that Tony Horwitz went out of his way to find those 2-3 Klan members living somewhere, and then wrote as if they were representative of a whole area or town.” [Cecily, post 23]
Tony Horwitz built a reputation out of penning pieces of this sort.
In 1998, he published _Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War_. He likened everyone who wasn’t taking the postmodern revisionist presentist position (to wit, the Confederacy was uniquely evil, in a United States that was founded and remains uniquely evil) was like every family who sequesters their crazy aunt in the attic, to avoid embarrassment and loss of face. Makes out everyone in the country who refuses to be a rabid, raving anti-Confederate out to be uniquely hypocritical. Unworthy. Evil.
In 2003, he published _Blue Latitudes: Boldly Going Were Captain Cook has Gone Before_. He crewed the replica of HMS Endeavor as it retraced portions of the voyages of discovery James Cook accomplished in the 18th century. And he applied the same postmodernist, presentist, Leftist viewpoints he’d written from earlier. Plus all the snark, self-righteousness, and arrogance of today’s SJWs, as he condemned colonialism and the impact of Western powers on “indigenous peoples.” Uniquely and unassuagably immoral and evil.
But he was a passably talented writer. He presaged today’s imprecations and condemnation being visited on us lesser mortals by the self-appointed moral arbiters who now infest the Left - most of whom are smug, ignorant, and talentless.
“the diff”?
None. Totalitarianism in all forms is evil.
Anyone defending a monarchy is insane. (Lord Acton: Power corrupts and absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely.)
There was a time when Chronicles actually posted articles by Noam Chomsky (commie).
as a side note most people kept crazy chained up in attics and outbuildings because there was no place to put them. State hospital started as places of compassions were nascent and the only other option was to kill them.
Absolutely, that is why I asked that. I see no difference in the spirit of concentrated power.
I am familiar with Chomesky’s work and his work about concentrated powers and the elite, and media manipulation would fit in a paleo journal as well as the most leftist of publications. So I can see that his early works could have been published by Chronicles.
The far left and the paleos have some commonalities, a distrust of power concentration and a disbelief in the media. They have very different solutions, but they do see the picture similarly.
Totalitarianism in all forms is Evil.
Progressive, Socialist, Marxist, Fascist, Communist, Dictator, Islamist and Bureaucrap.
All Evil.
Capitalism is NOT a form of government. It is a system of exchange.
I totally ignore all the noise by the left of the differences between flavors of Leftism. It is nonsense. There is nothing but fakery behind the leftist facade.
Leftism never built anything, only brought misery, suffering, death and destruction. Anybody who tells you otherwise is a liar or an idiot.
agree
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble
