I liked the previous method where it went to the VP, and then to the various cabinet secretaries. And since those secretaries were all appointed by the President, there would (hopefully) be a continuity of policy.

I've always thought that having the Speaker of the House that high in the succession list was contrary to the separation of powers. At least the cabinet secretaries keep the process confined to the Executive Branch.

In the infinitely unlikely event this would happen the 25th amendment would remedy the infection.

That's what happened with Nixon and Agnew. Agnew resigned, the 25th Amendment allowed Nixon to pick Ford as Agnew's replacement (with confirmation by both House of Congress), Nixon resigned, Ford became President, then Ford appointed Rockefeller.

This time the House Democrats would try to short-circuit the 25th Amendment by not confirming any VP nominee made by President Pence, then having him have an "accident."

This is an attempted coup in progress.
