I think you can probably put The Holocaust as a big reason, "If there is a God, where was He, then?", is something you hear a lot of Jews say with regards to the Holocaust.
My personal take on this as a Trump supporting Jew.
Please remember there are several categories of Jews. Reform,Humanistic (founded in 1963) and some Conservative ones have far fewer rituals and conditions than Orthodox and Chabad Lubavitcher (known for Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn of Blessed Memory, the leader honored by Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump). Orthodox study Torah intently, pray daily and fast for holy days,as well as work to do mitzvahs (of 613 named ones in the Bible).
Least of all requirements (none) are for “cultural Jews” as
comedians, movie producers, actors,singers and many average people who honor few or no rituals (such as Passover and Channukah). Mel Brooks types.
The last group or disgruntled ones from others, are the Bernie Sanders types. Communists frequently are that type-—no recognition of Judaism except to disdain it.
Most (not all) of the 24% of Jews who voted for Trump are Orthodox or Conservative.
Bernie Sanders has his own category to me: loathsome creepy lying anti-American Communist. Ugly, too.
