I was in college in those days and had the opportunity to meet Gary Hart in a very small group (fifteen people) and he chatted with us for over an hour.
He was _very_ smart, _very_ charming, heads and shoulders above anything the Democrats could offer today.
I disagreed with him on just about every policy issue, but he was clearly a serious guy and my read is that he was honest (and I am _rarely_ fooled.)
I was stunned when the “Monkey Business” was exposed. He just didn’t seem like that kind of guy.
Now I am older—and even more cynical—and that Gary Hart incident is one of the reasons.
