Sanctuary city jails defy ICE detainers, put dangerous criminals back on streets

Police in the Seattle suburb of Bellevue had a chance to get Carlos Daniel Carillo-Lopez, an illegal immigrant, off the streets in March — but a local jail defied a deportation notification request from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and released him into the community.

Three weeks later, police say, the 19-year-old Guatemalan, eager to join the violent Surenos street gang, took part in a murder posse that tracked down and slew a teen from a rival gang.

Mr. Carillo-Lopez, who came to the U.S. as part of the Unaccompanied Alien Child (UAC) surge, is at the crossroads of the current immigration debate, having gained a foothold in the U.S. thanks to more relaxed policies for those children — then managed to remain here, despite a growing criminal record, thanks to the prevalence of sanctuary city policies.

He was in police custody repeatedly over the last six months, both before and after the murder, and each time ICE asked that deportation officers be notified before he was released. Each time jails defied the request, ICE says.

“This is yet again another example of sanctuary policies shielding criminal aliens who prey on people in their own and other communities from immigration enforcement,” Tanya Roman, an ICE spokeswoman, told The Washington Times. “As Carillo-Lopez’s crimes increased in severity, local officials chose to release him, time and time again, over immigration detainers that could have taken him off the streets.”

By ICE’s count, Bellevue police and the King County Sheriff’s Department arrested Mr. Carillo-Lopez once in March, twice in April and once again in June. Each time he was released without ICE being told. Three of those releases were from South Correctional Entity Jail, which Bellevue contracts with, and the other release was from King County’s jail.

It would not be wise for him to be turned loose again. He wouldn’t last long.

California must go red, and soon.

There may be.

Quite a high percentage of gang banger deaths never get solved.

The humans involved may well be liable to being sued by any number of citizens who would care to document all the evidence, show up in Small Claims court, and sue them for the maximum dollar amount permitted for Maintaining a Public Nuisance. Now, that might not sound like much, but if you get 1500 local residents together, each suing each defendant separately, and personally for $14,500 (CA Small Claim maximum)...

...that begins to rack up quite a tab in fairly short order.

The biggest hurdle is the first case. If that case succeeds...Katie bar the doors, ‘cuz EVERY case that’s the same will also succeed. All the locals need is that first victory.

But what I really see is the population sorting itself, or balkanizing if you will. It would be so wonderful to free my home state of New York from the political millstone that is New York City. Buffalo proper is still RAT-infested, but the suburbs and rural areas surrounding couldn’t be nicer.

Lifelong resident of Michigan. We always pay for the misguided Dem policy mistakes in Detroit. Taxes and crime. Prison costs.

Balkanization is a form of segregation in a way. When conflicting types are forced together they clash and have wars. Bosnia, Middle East are examples. Staying apart they have treaties and IF they don't come together again (terrorists) they may have peace.

Looking at old staff gathering photos of my old job I saw how the 10-15 black people out of 70-80 employees went into one area together to get ready for the photographer.

3-4 years ago at the university student center they would stay on one side of a long planter that effectively divided the huge lunch room. University made a statement to ask people to meet diverse students and sit together. Bosses had it air hammered down and remodeled to promote all one area and not two sides but the same black students still found tables apart from others. Muslims did, too.

Thanks. Good food for thought there.
