Fill in Your Name

Bible in a Year : Isaiah 39–40; Colossians 4

. . . He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Isaiah 40:26 In Love Letters from God, Glenys Nellist invites children to interact with the Lord in a deeply personal way. These children’s books include a note from God with a space for the child’s name to be inserted after each Bible story. Personalizing scriptural truth helps her young readers understand that the Bible isn’t just a storybook. They’re being taught that the Lord wants a relationship with them and that He speaks to His greatly loved children through the Scriptures.

I bought the book for my nephew and filled in the blanks in the beginning of every note from God. Delighted when he recognized his name, my nephew said, “God loves me too!” What a comfort to know the deeply and completely personal love of our loving Creator.

When God spoke to the Israelites directly through the prophet Isaiah, He called their attention to the heavens. The Lord affirmed that He controls “the starry host” (Isaiah 40:26), determines each star’s individual value, and directs each one with love. He assured His people that He won’t forget or lose one star . . . or one beloved child that He’s sculpted with deliberate purpose and endless love.

As we celebrate our Almighty God’s intimate promises and proclamations of love within Scripture, we can fill in our names. We can trust and declare with childlike delight, “God loves me too!”

By:  Xochitl Dixon

Reflect & Pray

How does it feel when you realize God loves you and knows your needs? What Bible verse could you remember that’s a personal promise to you?

God, thank You for affirming that Your love is a personal gift for each and every one of us. Thank You for assuring us that You know our names and can handle all of our needs.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

RICHARD RODGERS

”BLUE MOON”

This song has a strange history.

Rodgers and Hart left Paramount and signed with MGM in May 1933. Their first assignment was to write the songs for “Hollywood Party,” starring artists in the studio’s stable. Rodgers: “One of our ideas was to include a scene in which Jean Harlow is shown as an innocent young girl saying – or rather singing – her prayers. How the sequence fitted into the movie I haven’t the foggiest notion, but the purpose was to express Harlow’s overwhelming ambition to become a movie star.” Harlow cast as an innocent? Please! The song was never recorded, and the movie was released without Harlow in 1934. The original title was “Oh Lord, Make Me a Movie Star.”

Larry wrote new lyrics for the tune for 1934's “Manhattan Melodrama,” starring William Powell and Clark Gable. The new title was “It’s Just that Kind of Day,” but it was cut from the film before release.

MGM then asked for a nightclub number for the film. Rodgers still liked the melody, so Hart wrote a third lyric, “The Bad in Every Man,” which was sung by Shirley Ross.

After the film was released, Jack Robbins, head of the studio’s publishing company, decided that the tune was suited to commercial release but needed more romantic lyrics and a better title. Larry was reluctant to write yet another lyric, but Robbins persuaded him. And so they rang the cash register! This orphan was to become one of their most durable songs, recorded straight, jazz and doo-wop.

William Powell, star of “Manhattan Melodrama,” had a career that spanned from the silent era into the 1950s, and everyone loved working with him. He was fun and unflappable on the set. He died in 1984 at the age of 96 at his home in Palm Springs, married to his wife of over half a century.

”Manhattan Melodrama” was the film that John Dillinger saw before the FBI killed him in Chicago. It’s a fine film, occasionally popping up on Turner Classic Movies, and its most memorable scene is Clark Gable’s nonchalance as he’s escorted to the electric chair. This is what it looked and sounded like in the movie.

I love the songs listed at the top of the page, but as a rocker (as my screen-name implies) I lean toward a little bit louder. Here’s one song that I always crank up on road trips:
