Kurds announce deal with Damascus as Turkey pushes deep into Syria

Qamishli (Syria) (AFP) – Syria’s Kurds on Sunday announced a groundbreaking deal with Damascus on a Syrian troop deployment near the border with Turkey, as Ankara pressed a deadly cross-border offensive that has sparked an international outcry.

The announcement came as the United States ordered the withdrawal of almost its entire ground force in Syria.

Defence Secretary Mark Esper said the move to withdraw 1,000 US troops came after Washington learned that Turkey was pressing further into Syria than had been expected.

Turkey’s relentless assault, which has seen air strikes, shelling and a ground incursion manned mainly by Syrian proxy fighters, has killed scores of civilians and fighters since its launch on Wednesday.

The Kurds feel they have been betrayed by the United States, their once formidable ally in the fight against the Islamic State jihadist group, and left to fend for themselves in the battle against Turkish forces.

– ‘Confront this aggression’ –

The massively outgunned Kurds described their deal with the Syrian government as a necessary step to stop the assault.

“In order to prevent and confront this aggression, an agreement has been reached with the Syrian government… so that the Syrian army can deploy along the Syrian-Turkish border to assist the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF),” the Kurdish administration said in a statement.

This Kurdish deal with Assad fulfills all of Turkey’s main objective of the assault.
Assad will keep a tight rein on the Kurds for Erd.

It’s also the only sensible settlement.

My thoughts exactly. Trump has engineered a regional balance of power so the United States can get the hell out. Trump has a Kissinger hat too.

Does this mean that after all the death and destruction, we are returning to how things were before Obama and Hillary, McCain and Graham’s Arab Spring.

Twitter:
“explosions reported at a #PMU (Iran-backed group) base in southern Baghdad due to potential airstrike.”

Yes, there is another player at the table...

Ok, so let me get this straight. Trump pulls out our forces and essentially green lights Turkey to go into Syria. The Russians have been supporting Assad. So now the Syrian forces, backed by Russia, supporting the Kurds, are moving in to protect them against Turkey who just installed the Russian S-400 air defense system forgoing the acquisition of the F35.

Am I missing something?

The only way Obama and all his cronies to avoid blame for letting all ISIS proliferate in Syria would be to trick Trump into making it worse.

There are no good options for what America can do in that region at this time. Some options are less awful than others, some options work out in the favor of the defense-industrial complex, one or two may actually have been good options in the past or would be in a theoretical future scenario, but none of them are good for America now.

I don’t think that is Erdogan’s objective at all. I think Erdogan wanted (and still wants) to drive the Kurds from the region and replace them with the Islamist (and anti-Assad) Arab militias he has working for him.

When you read about “the Free Syrian Army” you should realize that it is made up on Arab Islamists and is used by the Turks in their various incursions into Syria.

Quite aware of the nature of the FSA.

Assad and Erd both care nothing for the Kurds, and both are for putting Arab Syrian refugees in the area.
Heck, a lot of the area SDF now controls from defeating ISIS was Arab to start with too.
