IMO Columbus is the saddest figure in the history of this, or that, continent.

He was totally SCREWED by the royals in Spain.

Oh they gave him tidbits, but then took it all away.

I actually read that he was doing quite well at the time of his passing and had servants and the dying broke thing is a myth.

Maybe they rooked him but even the crumbs afforded a nice life

And he got to see some of the world :)

Yes, but his claim to goodies was based on getting the the Indies—the original Indies not the West Indies. It is one reason, I believe, that he insisted that he in fact made it, long after everyone else knew that he had, in fact, found a ‘New World’.

Considering all of the wealth his discovery brought Spain, they could have let him have much less than his legal claim and left him a very rich man. You’ve got to be careful when making a deal with a king or queen.
